D20 Vehicle Rules Standarization?

Now with Judge Dredd20 coming out I count 4 DIFFERENT types of handling with vehicles and how to use them. Is anyone ever going to get together and get this set of rules organized? I hate learning multiple ways of doing the same thing and right now this space is becoming a rule nitemare with DragonStar, JD20, Spycraft, and a slew of other modern games using vehicles.

Anyway for the publishers to sit down and agree on a standard or is modern D20 going to do it for us?

d20 rules standard is of course an interesting issue.
As a publisher, I believe it is my task to provide options for the players to find out just where they want the rules to go. When a set of rules becomes favored by the audience at large, that should become the defacto standard that future publishers should work with.

If memory serves me, there were also some vehicle rules in the most recent Dragon. Maybe that's a preview of what we'll see in d20 Modern.

I agree with tensen, in that multiple rulesets are not necessarily a bad thing. True, a cohesive ruleset would mean less to learn and more consistency between products, but it would also mean less variety.

The vehicle rules in Dragonstar, for example, are designed with maximum playability in mind. Those in another system might be designed to be more realistic, but also have a much larger learning curve and be more complex. I think there is room for both types, and maybe even more if they are well-done.

Eventually there may be one or two standards, and I have no doubt that d20 Modern will make a grand effort to become one of those standards, but for now I think the variety is good.

It would be nice to see a sourcebook or magazine that compiles OGC and provides side-by-side comparisons.

Vehicle combat is just one area; I'm sure mass combat will become another issue. New magic rules, alternative hit points, classless systems, etc. Isn't there a planned area in EN World directs users to which sourcebook contains which rules?

VEG is hoping TIMELINE becomes the standard for civ combat and epic level millenia spanning conquests. However, if new sourcebooks come out with OGC on mass combat, epic level play or other relavant areas then we will try to provide conversion rules and if possible integrate other systems into our own.

I hope that d20 modern will come out with a nice simple ruleset that can be used for vehicle combat. This would (as posted above) standardize things and make the life of a DM easier. Also it would allow more of the sourcebook to be devoted to other ideas instead of reinventing the wheel again.

Now what about firearms rules? Any thought if d20 modern will do the same?

Most of those Publishers who have created rules for Vehicles have also made them OGC....so technically other publishers could use them in their own game......IMHO I think publishers may be a little "afraid" to use another Publisher's rules so they make their own systems for it....

We'll see less of that as time elapses. Already some publishers are using the OGC of another company. IMO, the standardized vehicle rules will probably synthesize the best elements from all of the original offerings.
