But are you soaking in gang warfare, the military, or political intrigue? I didn't think so.
Some people get touchy about the liberal use of assumption by others; especially when it's a total stranger making assumptions about their life. Just so you know. Also, leaving off the, "I didn't think so.", would make your question seem a bit less confrontational, and a bit more like a genuine query.
With that out of the way, I still say that when you get right down to it, you do not need a default setting for a modern RPG; especially if the alternative to one is having more room in the book for equipment, rules, etc. We live in the modern world, and campaign material is all around us, and on the tv-screen/printed page/movie screen every day. Sample agencies and organizations with their own agendas, that's cool, but a setting most people won't use if they aren't using FX (IOW playing D20M not D&D Modern) just wastes space. UA got its own book anyway so no loss there.
If including a setting were a must, I'd have preferred something without the Displacer Beasts, Ogres and spells.
I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting putting out another D20 Modern right this minute.
I hope not. I don't want to buy another book I already own. Unless I can get it for $2.79 like I did for the 3.5 core books. Umm, which would make D20M $0.93 or $1.86 depending on whether or not you consider it to be a PHB and DMG in one.

For 2.79 I'd be happy to buy another D20M core book.

I'd prefer to see nothing but contemporary and maybe Q-department equipment in the core book, and save the "gear through the ages" for a big honking equipment book (obviating the need for d20 Weapons Locker).
That would be cool too. I was going to get Weapons Locker and then decided against it since the general concensus seemed to be that it was (how do I put it tactfully?), unworthy.
