I call 'em all Daemons (capitalized). Yoguloth does sound very like Lovecraft. I am only very loosely aquainted with his mythology, though, so don't mind me. Where would I find info about these beasties? I've never seen yugoloths.

Yugoloths are the 2nd Ed. & 3rd Ed. term for a race of neutral evil fiends from Gehenna that were called Daemons in 1st edition.

In 3e, they appeared first in Manual of the Planes, I believe. I think that they're are some more in the Book of Vile Darkness and maybe Monster Manual II .

And soon many more to appear in Green Ronin's revised and compiled Book of Fiends.

Prefer Daemon, as long as I can pronounce it as "Daymon".
Except that's not how the word is pronounced. It seems strange that Gygax didn't realize this, although perhaps someone else is responsible for the daemon thing.

Yugoloth sounds much more menacing than daemon, which sounds, well, redundant. For that matter, Gehereleth sounds much more menacing that demodand. (What's that supposed to be, a demon dandy? I picture a demon all dressed up in garish clothing adorned with feathers.)

To me, Yugoloth is the lesser of two evils. Why? Because unless you mispronounce it, daemon is exactly the same as the (very different cosmologically) demons. And if you do mispronounce it...

"Hi, I'm Daemon, Matt Daemon."

The thought makes me shudder. Actually, I caught it off Digimon, where (towards the end of Season 2) a gang of demon types started romping around the real world, and their leader was named Daemon. He was very powerful (his minions took on Mega-level digimon), but whenever someone said 'It's Damon!' I just couldn't give him perfect respect. I didn't realise it was spelt daemon until they flashed it up on screen.

So I go for Yugoloth. Or I would, if I used them. I should get me some more books...

Guys, I am Italian, of a race not usually known for pronouncing English well... :P

But has anybody thought why this name was chosen in the first place? I think they needed a name which is halfway between Devil and Demon. Don't ask me how to write down the pronounciation of Devil and Demon, but the "De" sounds different in the two. So take the "De" from Devil and the "mon" from Demon and you get how to pronounce Daemon, which is written "Dae" just to distinguish from the Demon even if the sound is different. I guess they argued for a while if it would have been better to call them the other way around ("Deevil"? ).

Yes, Yugoloth sounds quite crap, but I think Daemon is much more uninspired. They could have find a different way altogether, maybe Damned.

What is this revised and compiled Book of Fiends you speak of? Is it LoH and AotA compiled into one book would it? Cause that would rock!

Since there's no option for 'both' I can't vote in this poll.

- Fence sitting Spi... uh I mean A2Z ;)

Yes, it's a harcover compilation of those two books (revised for 3.5) and a new section, Hordes of Gehenna, appropriately enough about deamons. http://www.greenronin.com/cgi-bin/product.cgi?prodid=1025

Wow, the poll is pretty neck and neck although 'loths seem to have maintained a slight lead almost the whole time.
