Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

The game's stock was supposed to last a year.

A recent interview with Business Insider revealed just how well Daggerheart did for Critical Role's Darrington Press when it first launched earlier this year. Ed Lopez, Critical Role's chief operating officer, revealed that Daggerheart sold out in two weeks. According to Lopez, Critical Role anticipated that their stock would last a year, but the game was forced to go into reprints in a hurry. "The amount of units that we ordered we thought was going to last us a year, and it lasted us literally two weeks," Lopez said. "It's a great problem, it's a Champagne problem, but it's now changing our view in terms of what this product can be."

Lopez also revealed that Darrington Press has a three-year plan in place for Daggerheart, which includes the already announced Hope & Fear expansion, which adds a new domain and several new classes and backgrounds to the game.

Lopez also spoke about the hires of Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins, stating that the two would be working on both Daggerheart and D&D material for Darrington Press. "We really want their creative juices brought to the world of 'Daggerheart.' That being said, we're also doing a bunch of 'D&D' stuff, and who better to bring in than the guys who used to do it?" Lopez said.

There are multiple DH APs happening. This is a invalid complaint.

More to the point, DH is a TTRPG designed for YOU to actually play, not just watch.

Daggerheart is a fun, well designed game and whether there is a 100 episode CR campaign being presented has no impact on its quality as a game.

I am frustrated and shocked by people that demand an AP to justify the existence of an RPG. What absolute nonsense.
Firstly, Reynard, I think I've made it clear before that I find DH to be an amazing system. Probably my favorite system right now besides PF2 for Fantasy play.

That being said, I think the optics aren't great when the company producing the game isn't using that game in their major Campaigns. You have to use your product, otherwise why expect other people to, optics wise that is marketing 101.

I'm not particularly looking for Adventure Paths, I don't know why you jumped to that conclusion.

Yeah, in context that was quite clearly "Actual Play" and I was also a little baffled by the responses to @Reynard !

Im glad to see that DH is doing well, and driving the additional support. I've been enjoying both of my games quite a bit, and the ease with which it adapts to different game themes and play priorities.

The same reason that I would find Dungeon World, Stonetop, or Blades in the Dark APs cringe. IMHO, APs are antithetical to this sort of system. But I also recognize that it's for the fans who think Daggerheart is just 2d12 D&D 5e and play it like such. And way too much ink and blood has been spilt regarding that point in the General forums for the past ten or so years. If you believe that they aren't, then I would say that this difference of opinion is irreconcilable and leave it at that. Happy New Year.

I think in this case AP stands for Actual Play rather than Adventure Path

Yes. I meant "Actual Plays" not "Adventure Paths."

For the record, while I don't think Daggerheart is a good fit for a D&D/Pathfinder style Adventure Path, I would bet my bottom dollar they are going to produce one anyway.

As to Actual Plays, there are a couple ongoing ones. But even so, Critical Role's brand is D&D live play -- and that is a separate thing from Darrington's goals as a publisher.

Yeah, sorry, my bad. Hadn't ever seen the abbreviation used for that before.

Yes, I know that there are some other ones going on, but to have Critical Role not be doing an ongoing one, even if it is alongside the D&D one sends an interesting message to say the least. Critical Role, I believe, has proven that their brand does not have to be attached to D&D. I just don't think it looks good from a business perspective.

I assume those D&D projects are going to be related to CR campaign 4?
I would expect material for Campaign 3 first, actually, since they haven't put out any material for that yet.

It would be a sucker bet for anyone to take you up on, since Chris Perkins has specifically said he is writing an Adventure Path longform Campaign. And I am interested in what that would look like.
