D&D 5E Damage Die Steps

Well, I actually saw a very interesting table online. Which then led me to looking it up further and lo and behold, seems like we got something
Page 220 of the 4th Edition Player's Handbook, in the section about Weapons and Size.

For One-Handed Weapons: 1D4->1D6->1D8->1D10->1D12->2D6->2D8->2D10

For Two-Handed Weapons: 1D8->2D4->1D10->1D12->2D6->2D6->2D8->2D10

Hmm, could probably do a combination of the two and pretty much have the "next step" by following this in certain aspects.

I was looking at what essence20 does for its skills and it goes from d12 to 2d8 to 3d6, though the paizo chart would also work well.

A strange compromise is 1d8+1d6 (avg 8, max 14) would come close to that mark.
It's a bit unorthodox, though. Depends how one feels about mixing die types.
I was never sure why WotC was so resistant to doing this. It worked fine in Earthdawn.

And it's not like players don't sometimes throw different kinds of dice around when they get things like Sneak Attack, Superiority Dice, or a Flametongue weapon!

Since 2Handed melee weapons do not use 1+1/2 STR mod, maybe 2Handed weapons should just have 2 damage dice.

1Handed weapons: 1d3->1d4->1d6->1d8->1d10->1d12
2Handed weapons: 2d3->2d4->2d6->2d8->2d10->2d12

I'd do something like:

1d4->1d6->1d8->2d4->1d10->1d12->2d6->3d4->2d8->3d6->2d10->2d12 (being the final upgrade)

Those are all pretty interesting ideas. I wasn't planning on going TOO crazy with it and just like one or two steps. The Paizo one would be waaay beyond that. But pretty neat to see how high it could go up to.

There's actually a formula to how 3.5 does it, which is why at the high end, you start seeing things go from "just add another d6" to "add 2d6". I saw the math worked out once, but that was like 20 years ago.
