Damage to Items?

I don't have my DMG on me and I need some help in determining the steps needed to resolve magical damage against a character's items, both on his person and just sitting in a room.

You can get this info from the online SRD. The rules for items' saving throws are here (near the bottom of the page). Hardness and hit points of objects are here (at the bottom).
