Dang it! Weapon enchantments that aid tripping?

Take full attack with the good hand (whip), making three normal attacks then a trip, and then take your 5-ft. step and get your free bonus attack with the rapier.

Urrr.

I'm not at all convinced that's legal. The Improved Trip attack is "immediately". I don't think you can fit a 5' step in there...?

Pg 304, 3.5 PHB.

5-foot step . . . Usually, a 5-ft. step is permitted at any point in the round (such as . . . between attacks in a full attack).

And even if it's not legal, it looks cool. For goodness's sake, the woman was using a whip and a rapier; cut her some slack. Not everyone needs to dual wield +1 speed vorpal stump knives.

It's still the "immediate" that's... ahem, tripping me up.

Cleave uses the same phrasing - immediate melee attack. And Cleave explicitly states that you can't take a 5' step.

Admittedly, Improved Trip doesn't carry that clause... but I read the line in Cleave as explaining the "immediate", so I read Improved Trip the same way.

Well, I'm working on the book "E.N. Arsenal - Whip," so this is a good refresher to remind me exactly what some of the more finicky parts of whip rules are.

I'll certainly try to have lots of nifty magical whips. :)

The book? The book's 3.5e.

Well, most of the "finicky parts" brought up in this thread won't help you, then, since they're mostly as a result of it being a ranged weapon in 3E...

I do feel a strange compulsion to make a chain of whip feats that culminate in being able to whirlwind trip everyone within 15 feet, then disarm all of them with your bonus attack. I think I'll resist though. Maybe I could make it an epic level ability.

One of the first feats in the chain would have to override the wording of 3.5 Whirlwind Attack that forbids any bonus attacks from feats...

Interesting. This hasn't come up yet, because I haven't used improved trip extensively; that's about to change. I knew that I couldn't get an AoO on anything farther from 5', of course. I just hadn't fully parsed that improved trip doesn't work on anything farther than that.

You know, I'm not so sure that that's a problem. It would be the same with most other melee weapons, after all.
