I may be wrong but I think the origin of the brown-skinned Drow was the cover painting by Dan Parkinson for 1ed supplement FR1: Waterdeep and the North.

.... and all of you are using "outdated" materials. It has been changed again with regards to history before "the fall".

The last book in the Penitent series, Ascendancy of the Last, makes everything confusing, even on other FR oriented boards as nothing is clear. I won't give spoilers here, but they can be found elsewhere.

Some drow have been changed back into a dark elf, with brown skin? I think that some are also changed into green elves. The book does not make it clear. If you have demon-taint (specifically Wendonai), you are still drow.

Not all drow changed, most are still ebon-skined with white hair.

Which really makes it confusing if your name is Drizzt....

Evermeet

From what I can tell, dark elves are a sort of green elf, and it was the greener kind of dark elf that changed back in Ascendancy.

However, Evermeet has the Dark Elves of Atornash, pre-interference, (25000 odd years pre DR) be white haired, red eyed, black skinned.

It also suggests that it was Lolth herself who contributed to the evilness of the Illithyri by bearing children with Kar-Narlist.

I can live with dark elves being basically green elves, as long as they don't contradict Evermeet and change their appearance. My solution was having them blond haired, brownish, and having selectively bred themselves, until by Evermeet they looked much darker in skin and whiter in hair. It combines the Ex-Green Elf theme, with the books as written.
