Dark Sun, 4th Edition

Should WotC update Dark Sun for 4th Edition?

Yes to a relaunch of Dark Sun, which means a 4E Dark Sun. The new rules seem to better fit the setting, particularly the Martial powers.

I agree with the statement that WotC should retcon all the later Dark Sun stuff, and just stick with the boxed set. And I like the idea of leaving the history of Athas vague. Maybe do it like how WotC handled Gehenna, and publish several (well-thought out, fun) options for explaining the current state of the world.

No, they should not.

Darksun is a great campaign setting and 4e looks like it will be a good rule set. But that doesn't mean they will go well together. I think that many of the changes for 4e really go against what Darksun is all about. It's going to be tough to be a little gritty when the characters have unlimited daily powers.

Exactly my thoughts... :)

My heart says yes, my brain says no.

It would go over better than trying to use 3e rules, but the setting is currently a mess. (Not enough sorcerer kings, dammit!)

I realized the second I voted I'd be in the minority, but I'm still going to go with No for a couple of reasons.

1) I'd rather see WotC pour their energy into something new and not rehash old stuff by trying to pound it into a new mold. If a 3rd party publisher wants to do it, great.

2) I don't like Dark Suns. And since this poll is really about how you feel about the setting, that's really all the reason I need to say no.

HOWEVER, I hope for the majority that WotC does something with Dark Sun.

I'd like to see a rebirth of the Gazeteers, such as the Orcs of Thar, or the Principalities of Glantri. That stuff screamed "campaign world" at me. Hollow World FTW!

That said...

Dark Sun was cool, but I was the only one that liked it because all of my friends at the time a) hated psionics and b) hated that weapons weren't full . Even with the inflated scores and multiple-character trees, the perks weren't enough to generate interest. I can't see 4e doing any better with it.

So, I'm-a gonna vote a reluctant 'no'.

The PoL thing is window dressing. The concept isn't the problem, it's the execution. You'd have to jettison or rework large chunks of the implied setting, which WotC isn't going to do in any official capacity. No fey, no regular D&D dragons, in fact throw out 90% of the MM, anything tied to the planes, the paladin, the cleric would need to be overhauled probably, the tralalala-bard (when it finally appears), and so on. Dark Sun is fundamentally alien compared to your basic D&D world.

I can see 4E fey fitting quite well into the Dark Sun setting; remember, everything in the 4E Monster Manual is designed to be suitable for use as an opponent to the PCs. And what's wrong with paladins? As long as they were idealistic, Lawful Good holy warriors, paladins didn't fit into Dark Sun, but the 4E paladin has no such strictures. Heck, paladins could take the place of templar.

IMO, the only thing that really couldn't be carried over into Dark Sun is standard dragons--obviously, if you've got the regular rainbow menagerie flappng around, it kind of detracts from the majesty and terror of the Dragon of Tyr. But just about everything else fits in quite well.

While I wouldn't mind seeing a HC campaign setting somewhere down the line, it's not on my Top 3 wish list. It's a bit of a one-trick pony setting IMO, though it does it's trick quite well.

Somewhere 4 or 5 years down the line sounds good to me.

I would definitely want to see a Dark Sun campaign setting. I'd love to see more campaign settings and less fully fleshed out campaign worlds. Keep the actual adventures in PoL format but leave some that would easily drop into Dark Sun or other adventures. Sure... the modules wont all fit exactly but I think a campaign setting with world info and world rules, monsters, and suggestions for monster replacement would be great.

With the new monster class stuff... it'd be pretty easy to a take a PoL module and replace a level 4 artillery monster with a level 4 artillery monster from the DS campaign setting.
