If so that would be a very big change from what WOTC has been saying about Large player characters for over a year and a half now.

Do you have a specific quote or citation for this?

Yeah, I am curious too. I remember him saying the opposite (no large races).

Must any criticism be presented with equal praise?

The weak materials and breakage is . . . going to be optional.

Because other rules they introduce will be mandatory? "You aren't allowed to use this campaign setting unless you use these rules."

Considering that the previous setting releases, especially the players guides, are basically stuff you can kitbash and plop into any setting optionally ... most new rules will be modular anyway. It's up to the DM and his players to decide what to use. As long as it's character builder neutral or supported by it, it's fine. If it's incompatible with the character builder, that can be a problem ... but otherwise, all rules are pretty much optional anyway. The difference is that this time, instead of going with "this is how to fit in the stuff that doesn't fit" blurbs that put new races into Eberon/Forgotten Realms, they will say there are no divine classes in the "core" setting and leave it up to the DM to come up with excuses if he wants to let them in anyway. (which basically changes the player expectation from priviledge to play an out of the norm character, instead of it being their "right" to use a core class/race/etc) The concept of opt-in vs. opt-out is mostly a DM-Player issue where it's easier to add stuff in than to take it away if WotC says a player "should" be able to play it ...

You mean the other name for goliaths? :P

Oh, I'm fairly certain that's the way they're going, and that's fine by me. I just want some confirmation. ;)

Actually, having just read this ...
Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (The New Hotness)

I noticed it says "Get the first look at the return to Athas as you play through an exciting preview adventure! Each pregenerated character comes loaded with Dark Sun preview material – new races, builds, and other exciting rules options come alive as you battle for glory and your lives in the Stadium of Tyr."

The fact that it mentions "new races" (plural) means they may very well make halfgiants their own race. But I would expect them to be not unlike goliaths in terms of size, and a couple other factors, merely a change in skill bonuses and other lesser things for the sake of setting flavor differences.

Muls and thri-kreen make up "new races." You could even add Aarakocra and pterrans, though I don't anticipate seeing these.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind seeing a half-giant race. I just don't see it happening. Either way, I'm good.
