Likely, but it is boggling. It seems to me that previews are meant to tease folk who are on the edge and getting up excitement with those who had already bought-in, so to speak. Putting it behind a pay barrier reduces exposure.
Previews, to me, are like advertisements. IMO, make the previews freely available but when the setting is released the new articles appear behind the paywall. I don't think I'm the first person who complained about this though . . .![]()
I would say that the Excerpts are basically the previews to get people interested. The Previews (perhaps a poorly chosen name) are basically free stuff from the book early for people who pay for DDI; an added incentive or gift for paying, if you will.
Reading the PHB3 preview today on Hybrid Classes, there's also another thing they offer - the behind the scenes commentary. Being able to read exactly why they made certain choices is also something outside the scope of a teaser, I think. They're not always the most illuminating, nor interesting if you're not interesting the design, but that's what makes it appropriate for DDI.
