Darkmoor RPG - A crazy, rule-breaking RPG that will change the way you conceive "fantasy" settings

Acchiappasogni is proud to announce the launch of the Kickstarter campaign for Darkmoor RPG, the tabletop roleplaying game inspired by the popular mobile games Blackmoor and Maximus by Mooff Games, and powered by the Musha Shugyo (MS) RPG fighting system!

Darkmoor will combine greatly expanded MS’s rulesets with Blackmoor & Maximus’s settings, creating a unique gaming experience inspired by Mooff mobile games’
self-deprecating fantasy universe. In Darkmoor’s crazy world, PCs Levels are everyday’s smalltalk, all kind of treasures gush out from defeated enemies and if you see green skulls dancing around your buddy’s head, well, he’s poisoned!
You’ll fight breathtaking and cinematic battles, and your every single move can influence the scene and following attacks or blocks as well.

“I had a lot of fun playing Blackmoor from the very first time. Immediately, I realized how enjoying will be a tabletop rpg based on it and powered by Musha Shugyo!” says Luca De Marini, founder of Acchiappasogni. “When I explained my idea to Simon Marriott from Mooff Games, he was enthusiastic too and we immediately began our partnership”.

“When Luca showed me Musha Shugyo RPG, I thought it was the perfect RPG system for my games… so much I wanted Stella d’Argento, one of Musha’s characters, be part in our next game Smash Boys, that’ll be released for mobile platforms! Our collaboration is now running on both directions and Darkmoor looks and plays great!” replies Simon of Mooff Games.

About Acchiappasogni
Acchiappasogni is an Italian independent publisher founded in 2011 by Luca De Marini and Davide Quaroni. Davide is the main illustrator, and Luca the main designer of the various works published until now, such as the generic roleplaying system Destino Oscuro, with its settings Cielo Cremisi and Il Buio di Etherna, and obviously the roleplaying fighting game Musha Shugyo RPG. A very big community of fans supports Musha Shugyo and some of them published (or are about to do so) their own settings as expansions.

Blackmoor is a copy of Dave Arneson's name for his setting, and Darkmoor a close rip-off. I'm not sure that Arneson's heirs or licensees have enough of a trademark to sue, but it's really not cool.

There are so many <prefix>moor names in video and take tabletop rpgs. I saw it moor* as a homage than a slight/theft, and hope it's a great game. Arneson would just want it to be fun.

Copyright issues is a delicate topic and we don’t mean to overlook it in anyway.
So first of all thank you for taking the time to share with us your concerns prosfilaes, and thank you Curmudjin for your opinion on the matter.

We do not own the rights for any Blackmoor license. We do have an agreement with Mooff Games for using their games though, and we basically developed our RPG from there.

The reason we called our game Darkmoor RPG is related to this very topic: to avoid copyright issues of any sort, but still reminding players our roots.

I wouldn’t say calling Darkmoor a “close rip-off” to Blackmoor just because of the suffix is accurate though. If we were to judge copyright issues by a name in the suffix our courts would be full of “SomethingQUEST” legal procedures, which I honestly doubt to be the case.

I don't think *moor is a problem name. It's similar enough to real places like Dartmoor, Sedgemoor, Exmoor, etc.

If there is an issue, it would be with "Darkmoor will combine greatly expanded MS’s rulesets with Blackmoor & Maximus’s settings" which implies - at least to me - that the actual settings are being used, not just a similar name?

Copyright issues

It's a trademark issue, not a copyright issue.

Darkmoor is a lot closer to Blackmoor then those names. It was slightly confusable to me; I had to look up Blackmoor to make sure it was Blackmoor instead of Darkmoor. It probably doesn't matter much in the long run, but we do have a lot of unoriginal names in this hobby sometime.

There's a game, Blackmoor that they've licensed, or at least Mooff Games is posting about "our" Kickstarter. So ultimately, they're basing it off the app and not Arneson's Blackmoor.

It's all related to the mobile game from Mooff Games

Hi guys! I'm Luca, the author of this game! :)
Just a note about licensing matters: Darkmoor RPG is indeed inspired by Blackmoor from Mooff Games. You can find it on youtube if you wanna have a taste of the gameplay, but the game's free for Android and iOS so why not give it a try? :D

The game is licensed and everything's been done legally. It has nothing to do with the famous setting from D&D, except it's fantasy.

As for the suffix *moor*, I think everything's been told already. We simply had to keep a name that was similar to that of the mobile game and used this as a reason to implement interesting setting elements in the game too :)

Thanks for your interest!
