Darkness

Many people have voiced their dismay about the change to darkness in 3.5.

That the spell actually creates illumination really is weird.

When I read the spell again, I had the following idea, which would probably work rather well, without going right back to the 3.0 version.

Why not change it, that it does not create illumination, but rather have it restrict illumination to shadowy?

This way, it could be cast outside during the day, and darken the area, or it could be used underground or during the night to prevent light sources from illuminating the area, letting the natural darkness prevail.

Darkvision is hindered to the degree as stated with shadowy illumination. This would also make the spell at least more useful for creatures with natural darkvision (drow ;)).

Note, that normal lights (read as light sources, excluding sunlight ;)) and light spells of lower level won't raise the level of illumination in the area, since they won't work at all, as stated in the spell description.

If a light spell of equal level is brought into the area, and both suppress each other, other light sources would then work in the area, even if they are of lower level.

Higher level light spells negate darkness altogether, while having their normal effect.

I thought they made it crystal clear that darkness does NOT create illumination, as prevailing conditions of darkness apply. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm sure I read that in a FAQ or something...

Hmm... I havn't checked the FAQ. If it is actually meant (or rather errata'ed) like the above, I'm happy with it. :)

Hmmm, I can't find it either. I'm sure I read it somewhere; maybe it was an email someone sent to the Sage. Perhaps someone with the search function could check for "illumination"?

Here's a quote from the SRD version, as I don't know nothin' about no errata, and I assume they'd change the wording there if it was problematic.

"This spell causes an object to radiate shadowy illumination out to a 20-foot radius."

Interesting, but not my thing, sorry. I could see someone using it, though. It makes more sense to some than, well, projecting darkness.
