Dave Arneson's World of Blackmoor seminar

Blackmoor's one of the few things that has really caught my interest in the last few years. The sourcebook was more than worth the wait.

In addition to the campaign setting, they have more than just a few things coming out...

The Wizards Cabal - A book on a magical society of Blackmoor wizards and their day to day machinations to control/influence the realm.

Castle Blackmoor - The first dungeon ever created for RPGs

Dungeons of Blackmoor - haven't heard about this one. Perhaps a tie-in to the castle, though the rumored twenty levels are alreay said to be included in the castle release.

I just bought Blackmoor, and I was actually very disappointed about how little of Blackmoor was actually about Blackmoor. Most the book was crunchy stuff.

There's like a 20 page overview of the setting's locations and places. 16 for famous NPCs. And another 20 pages about life in Blackmoor (but that also includes new equipment). So out of 240 or so pages, about 1/4 is Blackmoor info. (The rest is new spells, monsters, classes, races, etc. Which quite honestly, I've lost my enthusiasm for.)

I would also have liked some of those "anecdotes" mentioned in the talk to have been in the book.

As the seminar was winding down and we started to stray deeper in to the realm of “reminiscing about the old days gone by” Dave was look out at the crowd and like a wizened grandfather stated “Ooooh, your dice (d20s) come in colors, and the numbers are all painted. In our day D20s came in black or red, and we had to color in our own numbers by hand”, and then quickly added “… and we had to trudge through the snow to get them.”

Hey, some of us did have to trudge through snow to get them.

I've got the book, but I've only had the time to read through a small part of it. So far I like what I see. One thing that struck me as cool is that he worked the prestige classes from the SRD into the fluff of the setting. For some reason, it seems like a good number of settings work the opposite way. They mention their brand new prestige classes, but not the ones from the core books.
