Very much looking forward to it. Sounds like a great addition to my tabletop games.

Plus, I'd love to see some cool EN gaming later.

I'll test it out for a while with people like you before telling my friends about it.

I see a number of benefits in playing online with people I don't know.

:1: I can get the hang of DMing on the VTT and become quick and good at it
:2: Some of my friends aren't the most techno-literate, so I want to make sure that the VTT isn't too buggy before using it with them, and that I can explain thing to them as they happen rather than be at the stage of figuring it out myself.
:3: It gives me a chance to test out some games and scenarios before inflicting them on my friends.

And :4: I get to play! I only really get to DM in real life (the cost of being a good DM).

gaming online sounds good.
having to pay a monthly fee AND buy monster minis separately, not so much.

And the previews so far are underwhelming. All those characters from the visualizer are beyond yucky.
I know it's supposed to be pre-alpha and all but i don't see them starting all over again at this stage.

I just wish it could be switched from 4e rules to use the 3e ruleset.

If you are talking about Virtual Table part of the DDI, you should be happy with what we will get, as it will be same easy/hard to use 3e rules with it as 4e rules. AFAIK, it has completly NO explicit support for any rules, you can just put some floor tiles, 3d figures and play with light effects.

Let me give another shout out to MapTool. I just found the newest upgrade (new to me at least) and it really blew me away.

I'd love to do DDI, as long as they can deliver on what they promise. Even if I just end up exporting stuff to use in MapTool, the most likely scenario, if the stuff like the tile map maker and character generator/manager are up to snuff, I'm in.

And I know a couple of you have said you'd rather not play than play online only. I'm not among your number. About two and a half years ago I moved to the middle of nowhere. No gaming since then except wow. If I could play with my old group via tin cans and string, I'd take it at this point.

I cannot emphasize my "no" enough. I can already play online without having to pay a service charge for it for it, and then making people pay for the "privilege" of using minis in the service they ALREADY pay a fee for is just asinine.

I will definitly give DDI a go, no local players and I only get a couple of games a year with the people I played with in college, so the opportuity to play more is very attractive.

We won't be using the DDI i guess. My gaming group simply can't find the time to match schedules to play via table top or via conference. We have been playing online via blog for a couple of years now. Each one hopefully posts three times a week. Games are thus slow.

We'll be giving 4e a shot though the learning curve would probably make our games a bit slower as we learn and adjust to the new rules.
