Deadlands reloaded is out...

Did the original Deadlands use both cards and dice?

Sounds like it'd be a bit odd, switching back and forth like that. Obviously I've never played it, though.

Yes, indeed, it did. Cards, dice and poker chips.

It seems a bit odd and awkward at first, but it REALLY lends to the feel of the game (Classic moreso than Reloaded, but it tended to also comparatively bog things down in Classic), and once you get used to it, you learn to love it.

Using cards, chips & dice really does add to the game. I even used chips in d20 to allow a re-roll of a d20. I never integrated the cards, though. I think it would be really easy, but my players didn't want to lose their dex bonus to init.

Savage Worlds keeps the deck of cards for initiative, but it's simpler. Each player gets one card (more with the right Edges) and acts once in a round (even with multiple cards) instead of rolling a dice pool to see how many cards/actions each player gets.

Deadlands Reloaded uses cards for a couple of other things like magic & gunfights (I haven't read it all).

Hucksters can use cards when casting spells, but they don't have to. If they do, it basically allows them to possibly cast spells for no PP cost, but at a risk.

The dueling rules use cards, but I haven't read it real closely yet.

Now to get back to work on converting all the old Hexes, Miracles, Rituals, Kung Fu and Harrowed powers to SW. :D

Gothmog,

Will this be made available anywhere so that we (okay..especially me) can peruse it? :-)

(And before anyone looks at me funny, I own all of the Classic DL books except the Great White North sourcebook and I could convert them myself but..well...lazy.)

2 weeks after the original post and my FLGS is still telling me the book is not available yet. He said it had only a limited release in the midwest, and that it was never sent to west coast distributers. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone on the west coast seen a copy in stores? Any idea when it will be released to the west coast?

My distributor sold out very quickly.

I can, however, order it though it will take a couple of extra days to get to the store.

Now, granted, I'm not on the west coast, but I can confirm that the book IS available at least through my online store.

Yep, I was planning on posting it in this thread and on the Pinnacle boards when I got it done. Right now, Hucksters & Hexes, Ghost Warriors, and Fire and Brimstone are done. I'm working on Book of the Dead (which I should finish later tonight), then probably hitting Hexarcana for the voodoo and martial artist stuff. After that, I might do the Indian spirit totems from Ghost Warriors.

One thing I've noticed is that I'm having to revise a little bit on how the powers from Deadlands Classic work, since you don't buy the SW powers on a 1-5 scale. What I've chosen to do is have the degree of power of the ability determined by number of power points you spend, and/or the number of raises you get on the roll. A couple very potent powers use fate chips to determine the effect. I should be done with it later this weekend or early next week, and I'll post it here.

Mad science was ruined; they should have taken it out before doing that to it.

Mad Scientists DID get nerfed. A LOT. And that's putting it mildly.

In fact, if I had to point to a single thing I REALLY didn't like, it'd be the way Mad Scientists are handled.

"Here, put on this bulletproof vest. Since it's something I put together rather than something you shelled out a few thousand dollars for, it's only going to protect you for like a couple of minutes before you need to rest for a few hours and let it..uh..recharge or something."

Power Points should NOT have been used for Mad Scientist gizmos.

Other then mad science the game is o.k., however I'll be sticking with Classic.
