Well? What of it? Is it a good game or a bad one? After Friday Night D&D went straight off a cliff into hell after one of my players discovered how jealous over women he gets, we wanna start anew.

Deadlands (not d20) ROCKS!!!

Play it, live it, love it!

Seriously, it is a lot of fun played in the original version. The cards, the chips, it just has a unique feel that ads fun to the game. Give it a go. (Also, get the Quick and the Dead, as well as the main rule book. Fun stuff in there.)

I agree. Without the poker for spell power and the cards for iniative, the game lacks the flare and old west feel it once had. Pick up the old books. Its worth it.

It's a good game, though I am not convinced that PEG will be supporting it heavily for much longer (I think their focus will move to Savage Worlds ... after all, Deadlands is getting pretty long in the tooth at this stage).

If you plan to play the original rules (and Deadlands d20 is at best a half-hearted product, so I suggest you do) then you'll really need the main book, Quick & the Dead, the 1877 update, and probably a couple of the splatbooks if you plan to use the arcane classes they - especially the Huckster - need the amended rules and extra abilities those books offer in order to be properly playable, IMO).

System-wise, Deadlands takes a little while to get used to (it is quite eccentric), but once you have a handle on it, I think you'll find that it works well, and injects a lot of flavour into the game (it's one of the few games I have seen where the mechanics have been designed as much to help set the mood as to determine the results of actions).

I have to chip in and heartily agree, Deadlands (original) is a superb game system with a great background and the rules could probably work in any genre that is humanocentric in nature. I have most of the books and doubles of many others from a few good deals and I would suggest the game to anyone.

absolutely!

i'd also recommend The Quick and The Dead, but the 1877 info may have been included in a revised core rule book (i'm not really sure about that, but once i saw a revised rulebook that was twice the size of the original...)

you don't have to have the 'splatbooks', but they do expand on the on the existing rules pretty well (as well they should! - more spells for the Huckers (wizards) or Blessed (clerics) more Edges and Hindrances for all types of PCs, more powers for the Harrowed (Undead NPCs (and sometimes PCs!)), more inventions for Mad Scientists and so on...)

some of the other books are okay, but not necessary...Rascals, Varmits and Critters (their Monster Manual) isn't that great, but does give expanded rules for PC companions (horses and dogs) and a bunch more abominations

i did like the Back East books (one for the North and one for the South) for ideas on what's happening in the rest of the USA and CSA

Also note, that the original books are a blast to read. They are the most entertaining, none dry RPG rule books I have ever read..

The combat chapter, if I remember right is title...."Blowing Things to Hell."
