I picked up season 1 on DvD before ever seeing the show, just because I have heard so many good things about it. I was not disappointed at all. Shame it only will ever air on pay TV here in Oz.
Season 2 is about 4 or 5 episodes in over here in the UK. It's currently my favourite show. Swearengen's monologues are possibly the best and filthiest I've ever heard! In the last episode I watched,
Swearengen was talking to the Garret woman with the child in the room. She kept telling him to stop swearing. I've never seen him look so uncomfortable - even when he was ill a few episodes before.
Dialogue: the entire show is written in iambic pentameter.
Maybe that's why some of you dumber suckers don't ing get it. If the rest of you ers don't think Ian ing McShane wins his ing Emmy your ing crazy. If anyone else ing wins, I'll throw my ing television out the ing window.
Does anyone else place bets on how far into an episode the 'C' word (the longer one, not the 4 letter one) turns up? It's usually in the first minute or two, but I once had to wait a full ten minutes...
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that 1800's frontiersmen didn't use quite so much profanity, and such modern profanities, as Deadwood uses? It does get me laughing when Swearengen is on a roll, though.

(1) These are frontiersmen living in a lawless boom-town, a self-selected group of people who want to live beyond the reach of the government in search of supposedly easy wealth. This is not a representative sample of 1800s westerners, but rather an assortment of bottom-feeders dredged from the scum of the populace.
(2) Most "modern" profanities aren't really all that modern.
(3) The primary setting for the show is a whorehouse/saloon/casino.
(4) The majority of the characters are, or when we see them are in the company of, pimps, whores, drunks, drug addicts, compulisive gamblers, murderers, rebrobates, degenerates, etc.
I just went to Wikipedia to check on whether the "F" word was covered, because despite all the stories about it originating as an acronym, etc. I figured it to be a relatively new profanity - within the last hundred years or so.
I did not realize that not only is it an entry, but that some people have obviously done their doctrinal thesis on the word.
