Deathwatch?

Summer-Knight925

First Post
So I have been thinking about starting deathwatch (the Warhammer 40k roleplay where you play as space marines, seems very fun)

does anyone else play/played?

I'd like to know:
1. how does it feel? in terms of play
2. are miniatures used? kind of a dumb question, but honestly a question I have
3. is it fun? Most important question of them all

if someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it..I'm thinking of picking up Pathfinder (already sort have picked it up), Deathwatch, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer 40k

atleast give them all a try

I think there are 3 different power levels of roleplaying in the Warhammer 40k universe, not sure which one Deathwatch is at. I've played once and would play again, as a one shot or two shot if we didn't finish. It was fun, but I'm not a big fan of games were my best stat is at 50% and that's considered pretty dang good.

I know you can find freebie stuff on the internet, maybe not specifically for Deathwatch, but I believe I've seen it for Rogue Trader. Fantasy Flight Games [Rogue Trader - Support] - Leading publisher of board, card, and roleplaying games.

1. How does it feel? See my comment above about competency of characters. I don't know what level Deathwatch is supposed to be. But, lacking competency means you fear everything, which I think is appropriate for Warhammer 40k.

2. You don't need miniatures.

3. Fun, yes. But I don't generally enjoy long term apocalyptic/post apocalyptic campaigns so that's why I said one shots are fun.

Except space marines KNOW NO FEAR (or no-no fears for the little killers)

no miniatures seems interesting enough, but I don't quite follow what you mean by the 'levels of the games'

Rogue Trader
Dark Heresy
Deathwatch

1. Don't know how much you know, but knowledge of the universe is very helpful. As for feel, this game is the action movie game to end all action movie games. This is the game where you can let them happily be the most kick ass characters, and it doesn't wreck the game. It's set up that way. Running the game was great fun and my players throughly enjoyed it because it lets them be space marines.

2. No, you don't need miniatures. The ways the rules are set mini's would probably be a hindrance. Some opponents (Tyranids, lesser deamons and orc boyz, for example) are set to be played as a horde. Hordes are dozens or hundreds of creatures under a single stat block. DW combat is very much played out in the imagination.

3. If you can't tell from how I've described the game... it's fun. But you do need to know the game universe and don't worry about being tight with the rules like most RPG's (at least in my experience).

The games so far I'd rate in order as Deathwatch, Dark Heresy and then Rogue Trader. Black Crusade (playing Chaos Marines) comes out in a few months too.

I think one way to look at the levels of games is this way...

Dark Heresy is the lower levels. You are a mere human following the whims of your master...and Inquisitor.

Rogue Trader is the next level of power in the game system. It's a different game supposedly, but basically the same game as Dark Heresy with a different slant. You can use the Dark Heresy:Ascension to get your characters up to this level of play and with it integrate characters from both.

Death Watch is the final level of power, also supposedly it's own game, but the same game system. You could take higher ability Rogue Trader and Ascension characters and play them alongside Space Marines of Deathwatch if you wanted. In addition, Dark Heresy: Daemon Hunter has additions of Deathwatch powered characters, namely Grey knights, that you can create and integrate into a Deathwatch campaign, or even simply just run using Dark heresy but using certain Death watch additions in your campaign.
