[December] What are you reading?

I'm trying to clear off my "to read" pile by the end of the year, which will necessitate clearing five books in December. That's looking somewhat ambitious.

I'm currently reading "The Gathering Storm", book 12 of the Wheel of Time. 100 pages in, it's really not all I'd hoped for - too much talking and not enough happening. The author seems (still) to delight in having his characters complain about every other character being a "wool-headed sheepherder" or similar. After twelve books, I get it - GET ON WITH IT!

RPG-wise, I'm reading the Pathfinder "Advanced Player's Guide", although I haven't made any real progress. After that, I'll be tackling the "Gamemastery Guide" for the same system.

Time permitting, the other two books for the year are "Renegade's Magic" by Robin Hobb (the third volume in the "Soldier Son" trilogy - not one I'm really looking forward to; I'm reading it to see out the trilogy and for no other reason), and then "Great Expectations".

Ghost Story, by Jim Butcher, is FINALLY in at the library, so I'll be picking that up to begin reading as soon as I complete REAMDE by Neal Stephenson.

Finished Mokingjay to complete the Hunger Games trilogy. If properly adapted to manuscript with good direction and acting, this will make for a great movie.

Also just finished up Shatner Rules, William Shatner's newest book. Was grinning through the whole thing. Good stuff, hard to believe that guy's 80 years old.

Almost done The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking. Well written book about the basics of M Theory and how physicists came to it.

Just starting a reread of Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, though this is the new 20th anniversary edition with annotation, a new novella and other goodies. I first read it when it came out and forgot exactly how many seeds Zahn planted in this trilogy that would become defining aspects of the Star Wars universe.

Gaming-wise, I'm also working my way though The Burning Wheel. Very interesting game.

Came across a virtually new copy of Gary Gygax's Role-Playing Mastery today at Half Price Books for $4 plus tax. Huzzah! I don't recall having heard of this before. I also found some vintage Dungeon magazines but chose not to purchase them. They were Dungeon issues #3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, each for $10 and Dragon Annual #1 for (I think) $18 as well as Dragon Annuals from 1998 and 1999 (maybe $5?). All of this was at the Bloomingdale, IL, branch of Half Price Books. The magazines are on the vintage magazine shelf, near the center seating section of the store, and at the bottom of the left hand pile of mags. I'm very excited to read the Gygaxian Tome as well as my latest issue of Loviatar Zine!

Still plowing through A Fire Upon the Deep. I am enjoying it, but it was a little slow going at first because it was a bit tough to get into.

I started reading "Nova" again (I've read it several times before) by Delany, always a good book.

Also reading TH Lains D&D series starting with "The Savage Caves" though neither of the books should take long.

I'm getting started on John Birmingham's Without Warning. Something happens that takes out most of North America in 2003 and worldwide chaos follows. Pretty good so far.
