Decipher's Lord of the Rings RPG - A Review

I haven't seen anything like that. It'd be interesting to see such a set of suggestions.

Another thing that I feel the game was missing was an introductory adventure. Such an adventure would have helped those new to the game (and the subject matter, too) get a feel for what the game designers were going for. I'd hazard a guess that there are even long-time Tolkien fans who need a little bit of help in getting started; it can be tough to think up new adventures for this setting. They didn't have to put the adventure right in the book. In fact, I would have preferred it to be a separate module that came with the book.

Man, that was quite the extensive review. And well done to boot! Do you have a regular collumn anywhere?

Aye to That, I bought the book at the GAME Essen, and i`m Impressed, and this Review give a very good overview.

Greetings!
I am looking forward to getting it, and even playing a game. I don't know though, it might just remain as an idea and "Gee, that's cool" book, because my players are sold on D20, and specifically D&D. But they might be willing to give it a whirl. Matter of fact, I think several of them might indeed, including Chrissy. Hmmm...well, they might be willing to play a game or two, but I can't see them wanting to switch systems or anything, you know? Heh. I'm very anxious to get it. It sounds cool.:)

Hello SHARK

Even for a Gee thats cool book I would say it`s worth it.
And I think it would be a very interesting game to play.

Happy new Year

No two ways about it, the biggest weakness of the book is the way the rules are spread all over the place. One resource I was pointed towards was here. This pdf makes character design MUCH easier! (mad props to Colin Chapman for writing the thing! :D )

As far as the artwork went, I would've liked to see a bit more original art, but the movie stills did a good job of contributing to feel & tone, IMHO.

Couldn't get that pdf to open :( Says there is an error in it.

Running AAR 4.0 on Mac OS 9.0.4. Never had this problem before. Oh well. :)

Here's one thing I've been wondering about since reading the book: is there any advice available, either in the rules or elsewhere on the web on the power-level of the Elves?

I like that the books stayed true to Tolkien, and didn't even try to balance the different races... But what do you do when someone asks to play an elf, and the other players start turning colors when they see him taking an hour and a half to go through and write down the three or four pages of bonuses? ;)

Try Decipher's message boards, in particular, this thread.

Got yer email, garyh. Thanks, but no dice. Didn't work. I didn't have a problem downloading it before anyway. The problem is that my Adobe Acrobat Reader won't open it. I have a feeling that it was created on a newer version of AAR than I have. Tried to get AAR 5.1, but that requires Mac OS 9.2 (or 9.1.2?) to run, which I don't have. My comp is running Mac OS 9.0.4. None of it really matters anyway, since I don't have the book and I'm not planning on getting it. I was just curious, that's all. Thanks for trying, though. :)
