bluemoonfalc; you're from Livonia? You checking out the Detroit Gameday there at Pandemonium tomorrow on Middlebelt and Ford? :heh:

einsamste: You'd actually be correct to say dark elfs instead of dark elves. Elves with a [v] is a Tolkienism. Actually correct grammar pluralizes elfs and dwarfs, not elves and dwarves.

he pronounced it "There is a brassiere filled with burning coals."

I was in a game at GenCon Indy this year and the DM said the exact same thing. I had to do my best not to revert to my middle-school inner self and snicker every time he said it.

DAY-6, DAY-12 of course. What else?

I am not a linguistincally challenged by having English as my native language.

Besides, saying 'die'-6 feels like commanding people are dropping dead on the spot or asking for a particular color of paint

I say DEE-6, etc.

I also say "drow" as in "rhymes with cow".

Also...

bulette = byoo-LAY
ixitxachitl = eesh-eet-SHA-cheet'l
sahuagin = sah-HOO-a-gin

For you native English-speakers who say "die" instead of "dee" in d6, how do you say 3d6? By using your logic, I'd think you'd either need to say "three dice six" or "three die sixes".

When I say "ATM" I say "Ay Tee Ehm," though I guess I could say "Ah Teh Mh," so it sounds more like Automated Teller Machine. Makes more sense to say the letters to me.

So the other day I was reading through a game book (Ars Magica I think) and in the very begining (you know, where they tell you that you are not your character, and that your wizard's Charm Person spell won't work in real life) they said "d6 - pronounced dee 6."

Now, I've always said dee-6, dee-12, dee-17 etc., but about half the people I game with say die-6, die-10, and die-youcrappyDM! (but that's something different).

So what do you say, but more importantly, why?

I say dee because that's the letter in front of the number...
Dee- cuz that's how I was taught to say the letter 'd' Thus when something says d6 I pronouce it dee6.

I don't think I'll be able to make it to play, but I may stop by and check things out. Gotta do some Christmas shopping for my gamer buddies anyways ;)

Not quite the same as pronunciation, but the same guy who I mentioned who couldn't differentiate something that holds fires with something that holds breasts also had a strange rule when he DMed: all dwarves must speak in a Scottish accent (ok, not that odd), and all drow must speak in a Jamaican accent!
