Imhotep is an Expert20; there are monsters in the MM whop could kill him.

Going beyond Imhotep, you'd have to use powerful monsters from the ELH to have a chance.

Are you including Imhotep's divine/salient abilities in the "Expert20" label? The gods are more than leveled classes.

yes in the chinese mythos.

Thanks, but my question here is concerning the current edition of the game (2000/2003).

are you saying you suck as a DM and can't convert The Killer of the Gods yourself?

Would anyone else would like to answer/discuss my opening question?

Is the ELH the only source of potential god-killers? What specific monsters in that book could do it?

Or what level would PCs need to be to challenge a god?

I think most Great Wyrm Dragons, The Tarrasque, and maybe higher end celestials/demons & devils would fair reasonably well against "some" divine beings avatars.. but that is part of the problem most gods dont fight in person they use thier avatars, and if you kill an avatar you dont defeat the god you simply annoy him more :D

Even if a god is killed unless he is killed on his home plane all you have done is bought a little time.. not an easy thing god slaying.

You could also try looking at some of the Epic beasties in the Epic Handbook.

Level wise to face a god for a group of PC's very difficult to say as it depends largely on which god.. demi gods being much easier to slay than greater gods etc..

Some of the Demon Lords and Archdevils from the Book of Vile Darkness (3.0) like Orcus, Graz'zt, and Demogorgon would not only be capable of dispatching certain gods, they would certainly have the motives and resources to do so.

However, in my opinion, the toughest thing about challenging a god is their portfolio sense.

From the SRD
Portfolio Sense: Demigods have a limited ability to sense events involving their portfolios. They automatically sense any event that involves one thousand or more people. The ability is limited to the present. Lesser deities automatically sense any event that involves their portfolios and affects five hundred or more people. Intermediate deities automatically sense any event that involves their portfolios, regardless of the number of people involved. In addition, their senses extend one week into the past for every divine rank they have. Greater deities automatically sense any event that involves their portfolios, regardless of the number of people involved. In addition, their senses extend one week into the past and one week into the future for every divine rank they have. When a deity senses an event, it merely knows that the event is occurring and where it is.
This makes it difficult to plot against certain gods, since that might fall under their portfolio, and therefore they would be aware of it possibly even before the plotting began.

I've never been clear on how that works in regards to plots to harm or kill a god. I'm guessing that a god of death would sense a plot to kill him, but would a god of love?
