Not letting iaijutsu strike in the game because it's stupid. I think that's a pretty good counter...
Except that I love the Zatoichi films... now if I can only get the samurai w/Iaijutsu Strike to blind himself...

So just give the guys sneak attack (which is effectively what the ability is).

The difference? You don't have a skill governing damage in combat, which means that you bear some resemblance to the normal way of doing things in D&D...

Eh. Zatoichi don't flank.

Only one defense - a DM that doesn't allow such an unbalanced skill in the game. :)

Isn't it called Iaijutsu Focus, though? Or is Iaijutsu Strike something else?

My mistake... its Iaijutsu Focus...

Is it really that imbalanced? So far, while its meant a swift death for one of my NPC opponents per combat, it also meant the samurai got himself surrounded and beat within a milimeter of his life with roughly the same frequency...

Something that make combat impulsive and dramatic (or simply wacky) is a positive, right?

It is unique, isn't it? Why is uniformity (neccesarily) a virtue?

There are plenty of spells left in the spell lifts that produce wholly unique effects (which can't be represented by modifiers in the resolution mechanics and thus exist outside them). What's inherently wrong with 1 skill that adds to damage in a specific case?
