I vote for "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats.

Everyone who hears that song instantly knows it's from the eighties :D

Sure. Expect the D&D crowd to pick the song with the video featuing a bard and a dwarf. A song that is now STUCK IN MY HEAD! AGGGGHHH!

The problem is that the early 80's "Bubblegum pop" was a bit different from the late 80's "hair band" rock, just as the early 90's "pop rap" was different from the late 90's "hardcore rap" (and I do recognize each trend had its origins in the decade before it).

I'd say something from Michael Jackson for the 1980's, because until the late 80's, he and Madonna DOMINATED the pop culture scene of that period.

Before this last year, it would have been "99 Luftballoons" by Nena. Cheesy pop 80's dance sound, message of nuclear destruction.

Now, though, it would be "1985" by Bowling For Soup. Even though it came out recently, it has the perfect 80's sound, and talks about the 80s. Even Retro 80s radio programs have been slipping it in to their line-ups! :)
