Defining a decade with a song: 1980s

Was there ever music less likely to get you laid than hair-band rock? ;)

For the record, I'll just say that while I HATE the term "hair band" for 80's rock, I had many, many umm... romantic interludes (Hi, Eric's Grandma! :) ) while those bands played in the background.

Came out in '79, but given its flagship position on MTV, I can definitely see why you'd say that. :)

It diid?? I couldn't find a release date for it and was just thinkling it was early 1980.

I'd go for "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer, "Amadeus" by Falco, "Thriller" by Michael Jackson or "Material Girl" by Madonna.

Those aren't my favorite 80s songs by any means, but they seem to really sum up the 80s pretty well. "Oh Yeah" by Yello might even be an option; it sure showed up in enough movies from the 80s.

12/15/79. Both members joined Yes ("Owner of a Lonely Heart") shortly after. One member also joined Asia ("Heat of the Moment").

"Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first video ever played on MTV, on August 1st, 1981. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I was watching at the time.

Another song that definitely defined the 80's was "Smuggler's Blues" by Glenn Frye. It had drugs, cops, drug dealers, greed, everything that the 80's seemed to be defined by.

It is still the best choice so far. The 80's were the decade of video... MTV, cable, VCRs, Camcorders...yes they have their roots in the 70's but the 80's is when they took over.

Besides, nowhere does it say that the song has to be from the decade, only that it has to define it. :)

That being said, 19' Something by Mark Wills does a pretty good job as well.
