Defining a decade with a song: 1990s

For me personally, since I was in 15-17 in the late nineties, I would vote for Me So Horny by Two Live Crew .

For the masses, my vote would go to Ain't nothing but a G thang. The Grunge movement came and went too fast to be considered defining. But the rap scene, specifically the West Coast rap stylem, continues to be a major player in the music world.

Me So Horny came out in 1989. I was living in California at the time and we listened to that album a lot. :)

Damn I'd have to second that! For years in the 90s, that song was an announcement that it was summer, no school, and you play D&D aaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay because you didn't have s*** to do. :D

"So Dre..."

"What up Dogg?"

"We gotta give em what they want."

"What's that G?"

"It's gotta be bumpin'."

"Helllllllllllllllll yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaah."

In unison: "Big assed dungeon!"

...................

"Loc'ed out DM goin' craaaaaaaaaaazy,
Killin' PCs they startin' ta haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate me!"

Well - if you ever get the urge, pick up Recovering the Satellites - so far as the 90's go - it's the one album that *really* sticks out for me... nice and mellow.

However, I understand that the Counting Crows aren't for everyone (but they do happen to be my favorite band).
I love Counting Crows, but I wouldn't recommend Recovering the Satellites to start. Their debut, August and Everything After, is not only a superior record, I'd have to give it considerable weight for Best Rock Album of the Nineties. IMO, RtS is a classic sophomore slump record ... the lyrics are phenomenal, but the music and production on the record aren't so hot.

(Oh, and Van Morrison never wrote lyrics as good as those on AaEA; he wishes. And I say this as a Van Morrison fan.)

"Right Here Right Now" by Jesus Jones, the "99 Luftballoons" of the Nineties.
Doubt is a really, really good CD. Truly incisive, in addition to being catchy from beginning to end. I quoted "Welcome Back, Victoria" on an English paper, back in undergrad.

This is a pretty good choice... there's definately a time in the 1990's that **was** Alanis... however, I might go with "Ironic."
Actually, I think "You Oughtta Know" is an excellent choice. Sure, it turned out that Alanis was a packaged pre-fab product, but we didn't know that at the time. IMO, more than grunge the 90s were the decade of the Angry Chick Singer (and then the Less-Angry Chick Singer) ... and Alanis started it all. "Ironic" may have been a bigger hit, but "You Oughtta Know" is more emblematic of the decade.

Teen Spirit yes but other great songs that say something of the decade include

REM Losing My religion and POISON's Something to Believe In.
