Defining 'compatibility' (Forked Thread)

It would be an interesting exercise, I think, to try and redefine all the terms in a typical D&D stat block (pick an edition) and change the rules surrounding those terms and values to create a different play experience but maintain functional compatibility.

That reminds me of an amusing thought I had once. You know the old Marvel Super Heroes (TSR) with the FASERIP system? The good thing about it was that it defined nearly everything in a useful way and tons and tons of official stats were printed that documented who was powerful compared to whom. The bad thing was that the basic system, while no-nonsense and fun, basically sucked.

Well, I thought of another system that used qualitative descriptions of things and allowed you to define your own traits: Fudge. So I had this idea of a game, called, say, Fudgerip, that was basically Fudge with the usual Fudge levels replaced with the FASERIP scale and using the basic FASERIP attributes as predefined traits. The result would be that Fudgerip and FASERIP could use the same statblocks.
