Defragging

What do you mean by that? It stopped at 20% again? If that's the case, there's some kind of disk issue.

I suppose. The restart made it difficult see exactly when it stopped. Running the default defrag in analyze mode showed only a .01 change in the fragmented file ratio, so I'm forced to conclude that it stopped in roughly the same place.

Thanks for the advice.
 

Make sure you have stopped your screen saver. Anytime the screen saver starts it will end up causing the defragmenter to restart. I believe if the defragmenter is forced to start 5 times the defragmentation fails.

Ditto this, but if you have 87% unmoveable files you got serious problems.

When's the last time you ran (updated/current) antivirus or did a format/reinstall?

Not being able to defrag is a symptom, not a cause.
