Del Toro to direct The Hobbit... and sequel?

Folks,

I have had to come in here twice now to edit out content inappropriate for EN World. If I have to do so again, I'm likely to close the thread. Please use a bit more thought about what you're posting on a site that is supposed to be family-friendly.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Bilbo who was gagged taped while a bunch of trolls we're dancing around him? :D

You might be thinking of Pulpshire or From Dusk til Mordor.

I would imagine the bridge would largely deal with "who is this Sauron guy, and why are we in this position anyway?" That makes it, in large part, the content of The Silmarillion.

Or... It could deal with the adventures of Gandalf in Dol Guldur, during the time between when he leaves just after the Misty Mountains and when he shows back up just before the Battle of the Five Armies.

*shudder*

I know that's what occurred, but I'm pretty frightened by the concept that they'll build a script and an entire movie out of a couple of paragraphs from the Silmarillion. The first three movies were good in part because they were guided by Tolkein's original text (with movie-appropriate edits, mostly).

From TheOneRing.net:

GDT: You know, I traveled to New Zealand just a little while ago, and one of the main reasons for going was to sit down and talk about the second film. ‘The Hobbit’, the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler’, it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film’, it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page.

I just don't think there is enough there to pull off an "unwritten fifth volume". So what would result would essentially be Tolkein fanfic ... and the lowest tier of hell is reserved for fanfic writers.

Unless Tarantino directs, of course, or they have Chirtopher Walken play the part of the Necromancer.

I'm still wondering about the 2nd movie cause there's not a lot to go one. I'm exicted about it though.

Mike

I thought they were making The Hobbit into two movies? I don't think they're making some unrelated second movie based on notes. I recall PJ saying they had broken The Hobbit into two movies.

You figure the death of the dragon and the war of five armies would easily be enough for two movies. Just because it is one book doesn't mean it doesn't have enough material for two good movies.

There seems too much material in The Hobbit for one movie. They have to cover the trolls, the spiders, the orcs in the mountain, the wood elves, the meeting of Bard and the people of the river city, the bear men, and the battle with the dragon, and the battle of five armies.

Plenty of material for two movies in The Hobbit. The success of Lord of the Rings will give them the money and time needed to do a proper job with The Hobbit.

I'd say Hobbit is 1.5 movies, easily made into one ala the animated version by removing Beorn and shortening the Mirkwood and elf halls sections. Or expand those and the battle for two movies.

But the Del Toro interview at TORn makes it pretty clear the two movies are Hobbit and the "bridge" film. The latter worries me.

From what I understand, the whole "bridge" stuff is based on background material Tolkien wrote that appears in Unfinished Tales. There's probably enough there to flesh out two movies. They can focus a bit on the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur, that's largely in the background in the book, and it's importance is largely it's tie to LotR. Also, they can put some of the elements about the dwarves of Erebor from LotR that they didn't bother with in the movies, like Sauron offering them the dwarf ring in exchange for information about Bilbo.

If we get to see Beorn kicking ass at the Battle of the Five Armies, I'll probably be happy enough. That's what I want to see the most.

They can also show the dwarves headed to Moria, and maybe even their losing fight against the Balrog and the goblins.
