Umbran said:I would imagine the bridge would largely deal with "who is this Sauron guy, and why are we in this position anyway?" That makes it, in large part, the content of The Silmarillion.
Pbartender said:Or... It could deal with the adventures of Gandalf in Dol Guldur, during the time between when he leaves just after the Misty Mountains and when he shows back up just before the Battle of the Five Armies.
Del Toro said:GDT: You know, I traveled to New Zealand just a little while ago, and one of the main reasons for going was to sit down and talk about the second film. ‘The Hobbit’, the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler’, it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film’, it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page.

They can also show the dwarves headed to Moria, and maybe even their losing fight against the Balrog and the goblins.Orius said:From what I understand, the whole "bridge" stuff is based on background material Tolkien wrote that appears in Unfinished Tales. There's probably enough there to flesh out two movies. They can focus a bit on the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur, that's largely in the background in the book, and it's importance is largely it's tie to LotR. Also, they can put some of the elements about the dwarves of Erebor from LotR that they didn't bother with in the movies, like Sauron offering them the dwarf ring in exchange for information about Bilbo.
If we get to see Beorn kicking ass at the Battle of the Five Armies, I'll probably be happy enough. That's what I want to see the most.
