Del Toro to direct The Hobbit... and sequel?

It will be interesting to see who is cast as Thorin Oakenshield.

That's the big role to fill in this movie. We've already got McKellan back as Gandalf, and I'm guessing they'll bring back the same guy for Elrond as well. That just leaves a recasting of Bilbo and Thorin, who would be the main dwarf character. The main secondary roles to fill would probably be Beorn, Balin, Bard, Thranduil, and possibly Gloin. The other dwarves are mostly minor.

Oh yeah, another big role -- they need someone to voice Smaug. Maybe James Earl Jones?

Do you mean Gloin instead of Thorin? Both Gloin and Gimli were at the council of Elrond, Thorin was not in the movie at all as far as I remember (and then at most would only be in flashback).

After all the Agent Elrond jokes we got ("Mister Baggins..."), do we really need the Darth Smaug jokes ("No, Bilbo. I am your father")?

:D

I could see (???) Michael Wincott doing Smaugs voice.

Hey, don't knock down the Agent Elrond jokes. They rock! :D

Elrond: Never send a hobbit to do an elf's job.

I do agree about James Earl Jones though. Such a great voice, but too associated with the man in black. :) Here's an idea though: Who says Hugo Weaving couldn't pull double duty acting one role and voicing another? Let's face it, Elrond's practically just a walk on role in The Hobbit, so why not let him voice Smaug as well. Let's not forget that John Rhys Davies did the same thing in the trilogy, acting as Gimli and voicing Treebeard as well.

And no, I don't think this is a daft idea. I thought Weaving did an excellent job voicing Megatron in Transformers. I was honestly surprised how different his voice was, that I wouldn't have realized it was him.

Interesting choice. Wincott could probably pull it off.

Yeah, I think Wincott has a raspy voice that fits a smoke-breathing dragon.

Another option would be Lance Henriksen.

It was commented on in the LOTR books that bilbo didn't look any older that 30 years ago. So bring back Ian Holmes, give him some younger make-up, and I'd be happy.

Don't know if it could be pulled off, but that would be cool.

Robbie as Beorn is perfect.

No, I knew I worded that badly. I mean recast Bilbo and cast Thorin.

And while I meantion Gloin, I don't think he had any spoken lines unless they were in the extended version. So not a big deal.
