"Deluxe" Player/DM sheets - worth it?

Kerrick

First Post
I saw these Deluxe Player and DM screens at the gaming shop, and I was wondering if anyone out there knows what all is in them, and/or if they're worth the money. I've already got my own version of the character sheet in Excel (autocalc), but would the screen still be useful and would the sheet itself have anything I could add to mine?

From what I've seen of them (which isn't much) the character sheets seem to be the same sheet that comes in th eback of the PHB, and the DM screen is the same old DM screen thats been out for years, just witht eh updated info on things such as random tables and quick reference guide.

IIRC, that's not right - if we're talking about the 3.5 versions.

The character sheets are like those available on the WotC site (4 pages). The DM screen is different to it's predecessor because it now is a landscape screen.

But take that with a grain of salt, as I'm too tired to check my facts right now ;)

My DM has both of these.
The deluxe character sheets are specific for each character class, 4 pages each. They include useful stuff like common DCs for class skills. Nothing you couldn't write down yourself if you wanted.
The DM screen is in landscape format, which I think works better at the table.

I wouldn't pay for player sheets, you can find plenty online for free and print them off. Don't buy the DM screen either! I wrote a review for it when it came out...i'll post my review at the end of the post. There's other DM screens that work better. The Forgotten Realms screen was nice. In fact, I have a DM screen & character sheets that I made myself. Follow the link in my sig if you'd like to check them out. Here's what I thought about the Deluxe DM screen:

"The only thing 'Deluxe' about this was the price. There's nothing on it that wasn't on any other screen. The screen itself is only about half as tall as normal DM screens, which means if you sit down while DMing you can actually see players, but it gives less info. I was hoping for a weapon/armor list for stats and pricing, but there is none. Then there's the modern screen that comes with this. If you don't run modern rpgs then that screen is worthless. I don't buy fantasy books to get modern info, I'll look in the modern section for that if I needed something. Combining the two & making you pay for it was a bad idea. If they maybe used the 2nd screen to add a weapon and equipment list on, and other helpful info, this thing might have been worth buying (at half the cost it is now). Honestly, I don't see how they can charge such an amount for a folded piece of cardboard and a fraction of info when you can buy an entire Players Handbook with nice illustrations and much more info for almost the same price. I recommend either making your own screen or standing the PHB upright and pretending it's a real 'Deluxe' screen."

Have both, use both constantly. Well, I use the sheets for my players, who love them (I tend to create my own in Word), and the landscape format of the screen is a huge benefit.

The screen's actual usefulness as a DM's screen is normally confined to looking up Turn Undead and Diplomacy checks and hiding my notes. Honestly, I'd do as well with a bit of cardboard I folded myself and scribbled a few notes on. It has very nice art, though. :)

The sheets have one flaw - the space for writing the skill bonuses is smaller than it should be. Otherwise, my players are constantly wanting me to photocopy more of them for when they get new characters or the like. The four-page set up is very nice.

You don't really need either product... but I'm sure that they're two of Wizards best-selling products.

Cheers!

I wouldn't bother with the deluxe sheets if it were me. There are plenty of sheets available for free off the web and most of the electronic character generation tools will let you export them in a variety of formats.

and i almost think the supplement screens from Dragon are better.

as the WotC one is too short. though, it is wide enough.

The DM screen is cool. The player's sheets suck rocks. I hate four page sheets. And they made it so that you MUST use all four sheets because the important info is spread out. Front and back only please.
