Demonically Illiterate; Who's this Demogorgon guy?

I know that people are saying that Demororororgon and Dagon's shtick are very similar, and that is true, but after reading a bit about your proposed campaign, Rechan, I have to suggest you go with Dagon instead.

In my mind, he fits a bit better, also he has more of a 'oceans / horrible alien madness' thing going on. I really like Demorroraaaraaah-grammanonnonnn, but I agree with what you are saying - there really isnt much reasons for him to be causing trouble for the PCs. On an uncharted island, Dagon and Dagon worshipers are more in-your-face-oh-my-gods-horrible.

MY TWOOO CERTS.

Greyscale, I agree with you. However, one possible solution is to just use Demogorgon as a starting point. I don't have to use Him, Prince of Demons, etc. I doubt my players really care about the Abyssal politics.

So you have a powerful Demonic entity with its eyes set on this particular big track of land. Maybe he is trying to corner the market here, religiously, or to infest the place so thick that he can have an entire continent as his "Outpost" on the Material. Or there's something that might allow him to manifest on the Material, if only he could manage x y or z.

Dagon is unfortunate in that he's stuck in the ocean. If you're in the mainland, hey, you might just be safe. ;)

He was credited with creating the first Death Knight although this may have changed with the new edition, not positive what they have or haven't changed yet.

I thought that was Orcus. I'm going off of memory and so am most likely wrong. Is Lord Soth the first Death Knight or just the most famous?

Unless you lower the land or raise the water ... MWAH HA HA HA!

(Seriously, Dagon is like 10 times cooler than almost any other powerful demon or devil, other than Grazzt or Orcus.)

The things that are pushing me away from Dagon are 1) 4e doesn't have a lot of aquatic monsters, and 2) I'm more interested in the actual stuff on land, as opposed to the ocean. Lizardfolk, Yaun-ti, old ruins, they're going to play a bigger part in the campaign that sahuagin and kopru. The latter would be diversions, as opposed to the norm.

He's just the most famous.

Demogorgon was stated to have created the first death knights (IIRC this was stated in the original death knight entry in the AD&D Fiend Folio). However, the Dragonlance campaign setting decided (being campaign-centric) that death knights were made by gods-backed curses instead in their world.

If Demogorgon is all that powerful, he needs a clear goal what he wants to be next. Prince of Demons is all nice and dandy, but there are still Devils and the Gods around - he has to defeat or command them, too!
I think he's aiming at destroying the multiverse. Well, half of him is. The other half wants to own it.
