First Post
After seeing two polls in one day on favorite Demon Princes and favorite Dukes of Hell, I noticed the continuation of a trend.

The Demon Prince question progressed throughout the day, exceeding 30 posts. By contrast, the Dukes of Hell question petered out at 13 posts.

Throughout my decade and a half of playing D&D, I've noticed that Demons are used with greater frequency than Devils. Heck, a quick perusal of most deity lists reveal that there are more Chaotic evil gods than Lawful evil. Orcus has a tremendous fan-base, and Chaotic evil monsters seem to dominate as the greatest/most "interesting" of villains. The most powerful evil dragons are chaotic... Vampires are among the most powerful Undead (only Liches, usually Neutral Evil are greater, and sometimes Ghosts, typically Lawful Evil).

So, my question is, which are more interesting, user-friendly, more campaign-condusive? Demons or Devils or Yugoloths or all?

Thanks!

I've found that it depends on what type of villain you want.

A rampaging force of destuction? Demon.

A behind-the-scenes manipulator? Devil.

Demons, for sure, are more user-friendly...

I mean, devils have the erinyes (sp?) who are classically depicted as torturous fiends with whips. I'm not that into bondage, myself.

Demons have succubi, whose only desire is to satisfy my lusts (right? ;)).

Succubi or erinyes - one wants to drive me wild with lust, the other wants to whip me within an inch of my life - which could be kinda kinky if it weren't so painful. Besides, since the succubus wants to seduce me, if I'm in to whips, she'll go for it. If I just want regular lust fulfillment, the erinyes is hardly going to go for it.

Based on this, succubi - and thus demons - are FAR more user-friendly. :D

Edit: Swapped embarrassing gaffe of calling erinyes demons and succubi devils..

You got that backwards, my friend.

Succubi are demons, erinyes are devils.

Demons seem easier in terms of power -- they're simpler for a DM to do lots of damage with.

Devils tend to be better manipulators, though.

And as I have a generally CG party, they have to be fighting Devils as their big nemeses.

Devils for me, I like that they are lawful and have a heirarchy. To me they come across as more user friendly (at least for the DM).
