D&D 4E Desert of Desolation Minis... 4E preview thoughts

I'm enjoying these figures also. I like many of the redesigns though I am curious about the Troll. It it listed as Feral. As in the Template? (Minotaur had a Feral version)

A monster pack would be nice but I doubt the skirmishers would agree.

Drider - nothing 4E here, but man, it's a gorgeous fig!

There might be a hint here. That torso definitley doesn't look like it could wield "large" weapons without penalty. (Unlike the minis for the recent centaurs and the scorrow).

Which means they might retcon the silly decision to make centaur-like creatures wield Large weapons because they're Large.

One of the designers made a comment that for the Minis game, you want each troll mini to be different. So if they name the first troll a "Feral Troll," they can then label a later one a "Lurking Troll" (or whatever). That provides more variation for the minis game, but the MM will just have an entry for a "troll."

I think the "feral" designation is based on the "Feral Troll" mini's ability to rage. That's an ability which may, or may not, be shared by all trolls.

So, in other words, some of the adjectives on the monster minis (like this one) are for the Minis game only.

Make sense?

Yeah, whenever Wotc puts out a resculpt of a previous monster it is named slightly differently to the first one. For example, the new Manticore is called a Manticore Sniper. Another example is that the troll mini from the Angelfire set was called a Troll Slasher rather than simply "Troll".

This means it is possible for the minis to have different stats and abilities in the skirmish game. It also makes things clearer for people that are trading the minis as there is no confusion as to which troll mini you might be getting for example.

I rather liked the set. I split a case with a friend and we are both happy with what we got. I ended up ordered a few rares from Auggies to fill in the set, along with a bunch of the swarms (I love the way that they changed those now) so that I could make a few swarms.

I liked the skeletons but I have so many of them... the mummy was pretty slick, I ordered more of those, and uh, the gel cube, even though I don't need it I wanted one so I bought one from Auggies.

I pulled a gelatinous cube and it's a lot nicer than I expected. Still not sure how many figs I'll get from this set as I'm a bit underwhelmed by it.
Wow, see for me, this is the first non-huge set that actually has sculpts I want. I could care less about astral this and planar that, I just don't DO the planes thing, but good old fashioned, out of the ground, boring but deadly monsters....
character killing goodness! :]
