Design work on paragon paths....

from Rob Heinsoo's Blog
he says: "Design work on paragon paths."

what are this? there are paths each ten levels? are paths what take the place of prestige classes? are there "Heroic Paths", "Paragon Paths" and "Epic Paths"?

I don't remember anyone speaking of this paths...

I imagine he's talking about the racial abilities that characters can choose each time in lieu of a class ability.

Although, hmmm, I'd just call those "racial paths." Could this be the other layer of customization at higher levels they alluded to before?

Perhaps the paths are whatever provides "equivalent functionality" to prestige classes? Or what talent trees are called now? Or both?

Nice find anyway. Time to speculate wildly!

The prestige class equivalent theory bears water in my tiny ape-like mind; didn't they say the equivalent in 4e would be a path you take alongside (or within) an actual base class from day 1? 'Paragon path' seems as good a name as any for that.

Those paths can be either :

* equivalent of talent trees
* equivalent of prestige classes
* a mix of the two

Maybe there are heroic and epic paths, but there is another option possible :

1) for the heroic level : talent tree. Those are the level where you choose the basic "mechanical" options of your character.
2) parangon level : paths. There is a strong "moral" tone to both "parangon" and "path" words. Those choice maybe linked to alignment, religion, way of life...
3) epic level : prestige classes or whatever their name. They already said that prestige class were available only near the end of your standard class progression.

This would reinforce the difference of gaming style between the three tier of the game, and, if done right, add a lot of flavor IMHO.

good guessing, I would like the second option very much :)

They already said that warlord has two distinct paths a player can follow. So I'm guessing advacement might look something like:

Levels 1-10: Abilities pretty much set in stone, and you gain all your racial abilities (they are said to be available at levels other than 1st, so I'm thinking five abilities for levels 1-9)

Levels 11-20: Choose one of two paths for each class and stick to it unless you retraiin

Levels 21-30: Prestige class, a lot of options

On the top of all that come feats of course.

It this sticks, retraining could look like:
Level 1-10: You can change your class.
Level 11-20: You can no longer change your class but can retrain your path.
Level 21-30: You can no longer change your path but can retrain your prc.

A path is a specialization of a class, demonstrating certain and specific qualities that make it distinct from a class. Where a class represents the time, experience, knowledge and resources you expending during your upbringing, a path is a specialization or shade of difference to what you know. A Fighter knows battle and melee – becoming a Gladiator isn’t too far of a stretch. Its more of a change of scenery. After all, you already know which end of a weapon to hold and the bloodshed is still the same color. A Wizard wouldn’t make the same jump and would take a lot of experience to get to the same place a Fighter started out a long time ago. Of course, the same Wizard becoming a Illusionist would have the same advantage a Fighter would being a Gladiator.

Taken fron another RPG using paths.
Milage may vary.
