Desserts of Scotland

I'm trying to find a Scottish dessert.

Players are going to be arriving at a castle in time for dessert, and I'd like to make something and put in front of them to eat.

Suggestions?

No, Icecream and haggis isn't allowed. :P

Blood pudding is a main, not a dessert. It's also English. Of course, what can you expect from a Sassenach...

As for Scottish desserts... there really aren't any which are purely Scottish. I always remember fruitcake and jam-and-whipped-cream sandwiches, but that's about it.

Remember - local specialities are those things which the neighbouring countries found too distasteful to adopt as their own.

There's a website of various recipes here. including this one:

APPLE GINGERBREAD (SCOTTISH)

1/2 lb Cooking Apples
Suger to Taste
3 oz Demerara Sugar
1/4 lb Golden Syrup
3 oz Butter
6 oz SR Flour
1 t Ground Ginger
1/4 ts Ground Cloves
1 Egg

Set the oven to 350F/Gas 4. Grease an 8 inch x 6 inch baking tin. Peel, core and slice the apples. Put into a pan with a little water and sufficient sugar to taste. Stew gently until tender, then mash and cool. In a separate pan melt the syrup and butter and demerara sugar together gently until dissolved. Leave to cool. Sift the flour, ginger, and cloves into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg to the syrup mixture and beat well into the flour. Stir in the mashed apples and continue to beat all well together. Turn into the tin and cook for 30 minutes until firm. Leave to stand for a few minutes until firm. Leave to stand for a few minutes in the tin before turning out to cool on a wire rack; cut into slices.

Hope that helps....

I recommend a dish called Fly Cemetary. It's basically mince tarts but not really organized into anything tart-shaped. It's probably just as easy to make mince tarts and huck them against a wall. But anyway, you basically roll out normal pie pastry and cut into random strips, mix it with mince meat and bake.

Thanks for the ideas. Not sure yet what I'll go with.

Deep fried Mars bars sounds yummy, but I'm not sure if they'll suit the occassion quite right. Bit to modern. Still.... might give them a try for myself. :D

On my trip to Scotland last year I had a dessert called crachan. Basically oatmeal (the real stuff, not those quaker oat flakes) cooked in milk to a thick custard consistency and then topped with fresh berries. Yum!

Not sure if exactly Scottish, though I had it there a few times. Clootie Dumpling is yummy (If you're ever on Islay, try it at the cafe in the Ardbeg Distillery :) )
