Destrechan sonic attack and equipment damage

How does the Destructive Harmonics material effect work on equipment carried by PCs?

The usual rules can't apply, because the PC (not being made of metal) never even needs to save against the effect.

Should the PC make item saves (equal to his Fort save or the items, if it has one) for every piece of equipment he carries that is the affected material?

I'm confused by this. I'm also confused as to why the greataxe is more likely to blow up when the wizard is carrying it than when the fighter has it...

One save for each item that could be affected, using either its own save, or that of the person carrying it, whichever is better. Note that non-magical items usually don't get a saving throw of their own, and use the owner's save.

As for why greataxes last longer if held by the barbarian, that's obviously because the barbarian has more places to hide it in.

I'd be more confused by why an axe on the table gets no saving throw, but an Axe in a wizard's hand does.

The character's Essence Aura (to borrow a term from Rolemaster) protects the character and the stuff he's carrying from hostile magic.

I prefer the term "Macho Dudeness" (borrowed from UNsenet) myself. :D

Ya, it is some wierd thing that is for game balance or else destroying your opponents items would be everyone's first move. It's annoying and it gets old really quick. I know, I'm on my 4th light crossbow. So, it might not make sense in real world, but I like the fact the rule is there.
