Playing off 1776, it may be that right now is a great conflux of belief in the United States and one of the few times that enough power could be gathered to destroy such objects. To do so, one must sympathetically link it to a symbol of belief in the country, and then destroy the symbol. The more powerful the object, the greater the focus the symbol must be. For example, a very powerful artifact may take the original Declaration of Independence.
The crack in the Liberty Bell was one such attempt in the future, but by that point there wasn't a strong enough focus of belief so it (and the object they were trying to destroy) did not turn to dust.
