details of Riposte Strike

The best way to get something out of Riposte Strike is probably to go against a single melee enemy with a Rapier, and make sure no one is within a shift of the enemy. Now the enemy can either attack you and get a Riposte Strike back, get an OA as he moves away or just stand there doing nothing. In in other words, you give the enemy a lose - lose - lose proposition he can't say no to. ;)

I don't really see the point of attacking an enemy marked by the Fighter, as the enemy will most likely attack the Fighter anyway so you will never get the Riposte Strike. In other words your attack is down to a 1[w]+dex attack - not better than a basic attack. I would rather have used Piercing Strike to be able to hit Reflex instead of AC or something like that.

I believe that tactic was being suggested as an alternative to using Riposte Strike (as it turned out to not work as the TC thought it did). Rather than using Riposte strike, just use any other attack while flanking with a Fighter (as you'd be flanking, and thus get Sneak Attack every turn, and the enemy would have a large incentive to let you keep doing it).

I don't think that works. The rider does not say "make a melee basic attack" -- it says make a Strength attack. (exact text not in front of me).

That's actually downright annoying....

Hit: 1[W] + Dexterity modifier damage. If the target attacks you before the start of your next turn, you make your riposte against the target as an immediate interrupt: a Strength vs. AC attack that deals 1[W] + Strength modifier damage.

"Artful Dodgers need not apply". Is there something about this that makes it that much better for Artful Dodgers that it couldn't be just a MBA?

Melee Training(DEX).
No, because...

... yep, that's why.

Artful Dodgers get Sly Flourish, which can be used at range. They aren't hurting for good powers.

I was only saying that in a game filled with options, why not make this option just as good as the others for "everyone" instead of just for one "build". I thought their intention was to eliminate "poor" choices and "traps" so the difference between those with system mastery and those without was much smaller.

If you really want that, then make a 16/16/16 character and use both powers. If you are Halfling, you can get away with keeping your Cha at that level and just bumping Str and Dex. Their racial defense vs OA's works well with your class ability to give you a steady +5, which isn't shabby. Your Str attack is at the same level as the initial attack (and with the rogue weapon talent, not terribly off on likelyhood to hit).

Of course, sly flourish is just plain better, but if you really wanna take riposte strike as an artful dodger, you can.

Powers aren't traps, thanks to the retraining rules.

Pick a bunch -> realize some suck -> pick new ones.

Besides, this stuff isn't exactly rocket science. You cannot avoid noticing that a given power rewards high Str or high Cha, so it should be a no-brainer to see if that power is a good fit with your stats & class features.

Personally I think it's great that they have several builds per class with different powers that are very good for a certain build. Riposte Strike and Sly Flourish is two very good examples.
