Detect Evil & Native Outsiders...

First Post
Got a quick question concerning casting Detect Evil on a Gnoll/Half-fiend using the Half-Fiend template. The template states that the gnoll would become an Outsider (native).

Does this mean that to find the Aura Power on the Detect Evil chart (3.5 PH pg: 219) I would cross reverence using "Evil Outsider" instead of "Evil Creature"?

Was wondering since "Native" outsiders were treated a little differently then normal Outsiders... ;)

Thanks...

No books here, but IIRC, yes, the person detects as an Evil Outsider.

The native part prevents the person from being banished while on his native plane...

Basically, it's up to you. Why do you suppose Evil Outsiders register so strongly with detect evil whilst other evil creatures don't?

If you think it's because of this...

Unlike most other living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature-its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don't work on an outsider.

...then this...

Native Subtype: [...] These creatures have mortal ancestors or a strong connection to the Material Plane and can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be. Creatures with this subtype are native to the Material Plane (hence the subtype's name).

...might well mean that Native Outsiders register like any other evil creature native to the Prime Material plane. Or not. I think this one is a DM call: so long as you're consistent, it doesn't much matter how you rule it.

No, it comes from the Detect Evil spell where the difference is big between Evil creature and Evil outsider.
A native Outsider is still en Outsider so....

I guess I'll argue the other view: a creature is only an "evil outsider" if he's both an outsider and has the evil subtype. Otherwise, he's just an outsider who happens to be evil. *shrug*

Good point but the Detect Evil spell doesn't take into account the Evil subtype, it's only Evil Outsider, Evil Creature, Undead....You know the infamous difference between Evil and Evil

If you follow RAW, an outsider is an outsider. The #1 note on the table says "except for undead or outsiders" so any evil outsider would be under the evil outsider row.

I never really thought about it, but I do the same thing as Stream. To me, an evil outsider is an evil creature, but an Evil outsider is an Evil outsider. I've always considered it as that they are infused with the essence of their 'evil' plane so their evil aura = (the evil aura that they have) + (the evil aura of the plane) = Evil outsider. So demons and devils use the outsider row while evil NPCs who just happen to be outsiders use the evil creature row.

Exactly. To me there's a definite difference between an outsider than can be whatever alignment and just happens to turn out evil, and an honest to goodness evil evil outsider. The latter literally CANNOT be non-evil, being evil is part of what makes them what they are.
