Don't feed the troll

To all in this thread. The OP did not start a discussion thread. He is not listening to you. If you have a contrary opinion, take a deep breath, let it go, and don't bump his thread with a post...let the thread die.

Just my two cents.

Just because someone doesn't agree with someone else doesn't mean that they aren't listening to what they're saying. I didn't know my wife had an account on here.

He's obviously listening, he posted immediately before you. And he's also had some "discussion" in the thread as well.

I dont see the problem with dual-wielding 2 bastard swords, as it was perfectly possible in 3.x. In fact, I created a half-orc brb/rgr/ftr with 20 str and lowish dex just to test the concept. High Str and rage overcame the -4 to hit penalty and he could dish out pretty horrendous damage when raging. Only downside was a rather low AC although he had bags of HPs. Also, it took a few levels to get all the necessary feats (TWF, Weapon Focus/Spec., etc). so he wasn't actually capable of dual-wielding them till about 4th level (FTR1/BRB1/RGR2).

Therefore, my first absolute and utterly concrete house rule for all my games is now that rangers follow the normal rules for off-hand weapons.
Balance tip: if you do this, also give rangers a damage bonus for off-hand weapons to keep 'em happy.

Substantial response: The following image is a reasonable approximation of my considered opinion vis-a-vis dual bastard swords:

DUDE!!!! You deserve a cookie!!!!

You might be surprised how many things a real-world fighter does with his shield. Bashing, pushing, bringing it about to all sorts of angles and such. It's a tough life being the shield arm.

The thing about dual bastard swords that kind of bugs me is how bloody hard it would really be to wield two four-foot (or more) blades in front of you. Balance issues aside (the falling over kind, not the "omg hax" kind), those two blades would get in the way of each other all the time, especially if you were doing all the tricksy whirlwindy maneuvers that rangers seem to love so much. There's a reason Drizz't picked scimitars rather than swords.

THAT SAID...

the game is for fun first, rules second, fun stories for your friends third.
