Diablo IV

The entire Diablo saga would be different if people stopped saying "yep, I need to carry this rock containing a demon lord by myself."

At this point it seems like part of the symptoms of demon rock poisoning include feeling the need to carry the demon rock by yourself.

To be fair, the One Ring was extremely similar in how it operated - you became paranoid of others - in this it seems like maybe it leans on your self-sacrifice button a bit harder than your paranoia button though.

I hope we are not getting Leah 2.0 with this story, not that it matters too much for me.

I think that I'm done with this game. I stepped away after the terrible launch. I came back for this most recent update as I heard it was good. However, my enthusiasm for the game just wasn't there anymore, and I just couldn't get back "into it." This most recent expansion announcement is also not sparking any joy. So that may be a sign to call it quits for good.

I'm the complete opposite in regards to the current season, really loving it and I think they've made it a game worth playing, I think that I'll finally hit level 100 this season.

I haven't looked too much into the expansion, I'll probably get the basic game since I don't really care enough for the cosmetics. I'm still enjoying the lore and such so will keep playing.

I don't doubt that it's a much better game now, but while playing, my heart no longer felt particularly into the game, and sometimes that's what kills an interest more than than the quality of the game.

Yeah, I hear that. Games that I otherwise enjoy I will often stop for the same reason only to get into them again months or even years later.

Makes sense to me. I briefly played and then quit D3 a couple of times and didn't really "come back" until the Necromancer got added. I still like Path of Exile, style and concept-wise, but my heart isn't in actually playing it, because it's become such a speedy screen-clear kind of game, so I haven't really played the last few seasons (but am excited for PoE2).

I imagine D4 will be around for quite a few more years unless it suddenly stops making money. That seems very unlikely given they are now progressing in a much more positive direction and given the sheer number of people I see around who are physically showing that they bought the $90 version of the expansion (which is normally $40), or wearing cosmetic armour that costs $25+.

And because it'll be around, and isn't subscription or whatever, you can always dip back in. Given that the base game + expansion pack is $70 just like the base game was, I imagine future expansions will package all previous expansions with them too (for $40).

Re: Leah 2.0, I doubt it, I think they probably learned from the the pushback on that (D4's story largely avoids the pitfalls D3 had, albeit it's still a Diablo story). More likely we catch up with her in either this expansion or the next before she becomes a demon, but the stone will end up getting taken from her or handed off or something.

(The only way I see D4 getting "taken out" is if PoE2 is drastically better - and whilst it definitely has better art design, and will undoubtedly have a smarter story, I am skeptical that the gameplay and performance will be better enough to convince people to change over to it. Not impossible though.)

Yeah, same here. There's just too many moving parts in this game for me and it doesn't look like they are moving away from this. Also, I'm still not sold on the shared world (although I do think that having an open world after the campaign makes sense). So based on the sentiment I see online, it's clearly becoming a better game - just one not targeting people like me.
Which is a bit of a shame, since they did a really good job with the background/terrain visuals and controls are quite smooth. But otherwise, I guess D2R will be peak Diablo for me. At least until they do a remake of the first game (just wishful thinking, no substantial rumors in that direction).

They're only going to add more, I'd predict.

Right now we have:
  • Your skill build
  • Your paragon path (which is immensely badly handled - you can't save/load it, and it's incredibly tedious to rebuild if you respec)
  • The Glyphs you place into your paragon path, each of which needs to be levelled up individually by doing Nightmare Dungeons
Then your gear has
  • Quality (presumably Legendary but...)
  • Are you using any Uniques? If so you have to build around them
  • ilevel (though this quickly all becomes 925)
  • The three "basic" random stats on the gear, one of which you can (very expensively) re-roll with Enchanting
  • These three stats can also be randomly Greater Affix'd for 50% higher and maxed-out
  • The Legendary Aspect you put on to each piece of gear, which has a huge impact on what you can do
  • Two "Temper" slots on the gear which can give massive, game-changing bonuses or otherwise significantly modify skills - they're semi-random and if you get the wrong ones, can kind of render good gear useless or at least very sub-par.
  • Reforging the gear (or whatever it's called) using new mats from The Pit which give either 5% bonuses to everything, or 25% bonuses to one of the basic or tempered stats (randomly) and you can reset this at insane expense if the wrong stat got the 25% bonus
  • Sockets on most of the gear slots, and choosing the gems which go in those - oh and you have to farm the gem fragments to create the gems (at least they don't sit in your inventory anymore!)
Then you have what Elixir you're using, and whether you're bothering with Incense (!!!)

And that's just building and gearing your character, not even picking what content to do and so on. It's not hugely complicated but it's a lot to be fiddling with and is pushing D4 into the same kind of niche D3 ended up in. Just D4 is a lot more popular than D3 was.

My wife and I are the weirdos who like the story of Diablo, so we'll pick up the expansion and play through it once she's reached max level in the new WoW expansion (honestly, they should stagger these things better; there's a lot of crossover in the two audiences). So probably Christmastime.

The only real reason I finished diablo 3 on release was because I love the story of diablo, I didn't play that game again until the expansion came out where they'd completely changed the gameplay. Once seasons started on d3, my friend and I were fairly consistent at playing it.

I have played each of the seasons for D4, but I think this season might be the only time I've hit level 100, though I said that last season and only made it to 92 (my first character to reach 90 since release). I'm 5 levels away from 100, hoping to finish off the season journey this time.
