Dice at the table

As DM, I only use one of each size - so 6 in total.

(This doesn't count my 30 color-specifc d6's kept nearby for monsters...)

Depends on character.
Mages I tend to have numerous d4's and d'6s with maybe 1d12 and couple of d20 and a couple of d10s.

My last character a Monk reached the sweet spot where he did d10 dmaage so that meant 1 die. A d20. use d20 to hit and treat as a d10 to do damage like in the old days.

as a DM I have my set of 2d4, 4d6, 1d8,2d10,1d12, and 1d20. The rest sit in a box (yeah, I have a dice box, not bag.) next to me and I allow my players to use them if they need. Although one of my players picked up several sets for the group last week so, I figure everyone will have no need for mine anymore. As a player ... well, I do'nt remember what it's like to be a player sadly ;)

As a player, one set of seven dice. As a DM, five of each die except the d12 which I only put out two of. All d20s must be different colors, so I can assign them and roll them together. Preferably each d6 is a different color, etc. Dice are arranged by kind in separate circles and are returned there after used. Pencils are arranged to the left of dice, according to size.

I have at least 5 of each of the basic types including my Big d20. THat way if any of them mis behave I can put the backups into the game.

This is my operating theory too. Ya gotta have a bullpen.

When playing I have two sets out to use. A primary and a backup.
When DMing I have four sets available.
Of course I have a few hundred backups available within arms reach. Just in case ;)
