Dice at the table

I have out:

d20: 2 or 3
d10: 2 if I'm playing the dwarf fighter with the dwarven greataxe. If not, none.
d8: 2 or 3
d6: varies. For cleric or wizard: anywhere from 2 to 10 (I've had as many as 25 out when we were playing epic and I was playing the epic cleric with enhanced Flame Strikes! )
d4: none unless I'm playing the wizard
d12: none

I have two other players who dump all their dice out on the table.

For me, I just get what I need for that game.

I have my dice-box with me, but typically I will only have out two to four dice - a d20 and the character's usual damage die, with a d10 ready if I need to roll for concealment or stabilisation.

It depends. If I'm a player, I usually have one set, plus a spare d20 in case I'm rolling badly, plus any special dice I might need for that character. For instance, in Steve Creech's game my fighter has a BF sword that does 1d10 plus 1d6 frost, 1d6 fire and 1d6 shock damage. I have three special d6s for this, so it's clear exactly how many points of each type of damage her BFS does.

When I DM, I tend to have lots of dice so I can roll multiple checks at once, or roll the damage done by a whole group of enemies at once, and so forth.

Plus my dice are so pretty that I just like to have them out where I can see them. Why are you looking at me like that?

I used to be guilty of bringing the whole 'bag', which was one of those plastic square bags that sheets come in for a queen sized bed. I've purchased several 'pound-o-dice' bags off of ebay.

I DM so I expect myself to need more dice on hand than my players would. I have however scaled down what I bring to the table to a standard dice bag. My standard is: 5d4, 10d6, 2d8, 2d10, 1d12, 5d20.

I keep the additional d4's and d6's for spells and to use as stand-ins when an appropriate mini isn't available. All of the d20's are different colors so that I can roll them all at once for whatever reason and be able to tell them apart (i.e. roll all of a creatures attacks at once or performing a roll for a character where only one die counts as the character's roll but the player doesn't know which one).

Tons. We play at my house, so my treasure chest full of dice is always within arm's reach.

Usually tons, unless special circumstances warrant. Sometimes if I'm just playing I'll bring 10 to 20 depending on the character. But as a DM I have the mother load close to hand.

I always have out 2 full sets, then whatever extra dice I need for that specific character. Currently I have a high level sorcerer, so that means about 17 d6's, magic missle dice (yup, I still use it now and then), and some extra d20's since my dice tend to roll right off the table. I can just roll another one and pick up the dice I dropped after my turn.

I always bring at least 2 full "sets" of dice to the table with me. I add a few extra d20 and some d6's to round out the lot. All the rest of my dice are in my dice bag within easy reach.

I divested myself of all my gaming stuff in 2002---twenty years worth gone in a puff of Ebay. Hundreds of dice.

My current collection is more streamlined. Today, D&D consists of one of every die type, plus two extra six-siders.

Of course, there was a session last year where I'd forgotten my dice and nobody had a spare set. Rather than let on that I was diceless, I just rolled an Abyssal Maw behind the screen and made the numbers up. Nobody noticed, and I found a use for that stupid miniature.

For DMing, four full sets. Though I find that isn't really ideal -- I need more d20, d8, and d6s than that, and fewer d10 and d12s.

Luckily diaglo always has plenty of extra on hand.
