Did I imagine this? ("Spending" skill points)

I could have sworn that you could only spend one skill point per level on a given skill. Now I see examples to the contrary, and can't seem to find the "rule" I was so sure of...

Was I just imagining things, or perhaps I'm confusing editions?

basically you mean playing catchup?

as far as I know, their is only a maximum cap on skill points (your level +3), but no limit per a level.

There is no such rule. You can spend any number of skill points on something, as long as you don't increase its rank above the maximum rank allowed at that level.

Indeed, the last two times the party wizard has leveled up in my game, he has put half his points into two previously unused skills each time.

This is definitely not without its drawbacks.

There is no such rule in the rulebooks but you could quite easily make it a house rule if you wanted. In my games I prefer that players have somehow used the skills that they are increasing at their level-up.

There is no such rule.

Mind you, if a person never increased their character's INT, never multi-classed, and always maxed out the same skills, then in effect they would be only putting one point in each skill per level after the first level.

Which would mean they could never increase a 'trained use only' skill unless they took it at 1st level?
