Did Monster Builder not update yet?

The printout... Does it NOT TAKE AN ENTIRE PAGE LIKE BEFORE OR IS IT JUST ME?!?

I seem to be able to copy/paste monsters in powerpoint as before but they don't take as much space as before!

Seems to take up about as much room now as it would, were it in a printed book.

So now if you pasted it into a properly formatted word document, and added the other sections the MMs have, it would pretty much look just like the books.

Neat...

Neat, for me, is an understatement. It's the feature I wanted the most (aside from the new monster format of course).

They have not changed HP at all actually. The increased damage results in lower level monsters being more effective, as opposed to having to use higher level monsters for the same thing. The net effect is faster and far more violent combats.

This means as it stands a MM1 monster is objectively weaker than a MM3 monster and so they shouldn't be worth the same XP / level. Unless the hp really has gone down or there's something I'm missing .. So just wait for the math to update across the board?? At which point the game should be more challenging at any tier?

I'll be running a heroic MM3 encounter tomorrow ( yetis) so I'll be able to see better then

So... if the Wizards don't update the math of MM1 monsters, is there anything legally preventing the community from distributing packages with xml files with updated MM1 critters to import manually into the Monster builder? No idea if it would be worth the effort, but what if everyone just updates a couple of monsters and releases them?

I'd asked previously how many people would be interested, and the response was lackluster at best.

Nothing else, it's probably worth waiting for the Monster Vault to come out and see whether there's even all that many that need updating.

This is good news, especially about the fix to HPs.

First, deep breath. Count to 10, then continue on. ;)

Now, forget the whole XP thing, you are complicating it too much. A 5th level monster in MM1 is worth the same as a 5th level monster in MM3. XP does not change in any way, shape or form.

As for damage, it has increased substantially. HP have changed somewhat, and in most (maybe all) it has gone down. It likely means you can get rid of your house rule of half hit points, 2x damage.

Hope this helps.

Just noticed that bloodied HPs in the builder now are 1/2 HPs rounded up. Minor inconvenience, but thought I would share.

Okay, once again hit points of NORMAL monsters haven't changed at all (that I can remember anyway). What has changed HP wise was done in MM2, solos lost 20% of their total HP after paragon tier, because they changed the basic HP math from total HP x 5 after level 11 to the same as heroic, total HP x 4. Normal creatures have the same hit points, the damage and accuracy values in MM3 creatures have changed.

This does mean that monsters pre-MM3 are not as good. Brutes need +2 accuracy and far more damage, Soldiers need -2 to hit and more damage etc. Hit points have not changed. But given that equal level monsters are brutally effective combatants even against epic PCs, adjusting hit points isn't needed. Just use monsters of a level closer to that of the PCs rather than needing a level +5 monster just to be challenging.

Once I get my internet back at home I'll make a post detailing all the various things that should be done to MM1 and MM2 creatures (plus what source books use what maths) to make them like the current maths for monsters.

For those wondering, as expected, you won't be able to update Masterplan with the new monsters. It downloads them just fine, but it runs into parsing errors and can't put them in a library.

It's a shame - but, like I said, far from unexpected.

-O

What about exported-from-monster-builder XML monsters?
