Did someone declare January "Edition Wars" month?

I see a very striking similarity in 3.xE and 2E. Tons of additional splat books/supplements power creep, kits, prestige classes etc.

And, as in 2e, these things give options; but it is incumbant upon the DM to determine how those options should be limited.

...but saying nothing about the more extensive changes (i.e., feats and skills).

Well, that's true, but only if you ignore bits of page 3, almost the entire page 7, 8 and 9 and parts of page 10, 11 and 12, where skills and feats are described. The skills are even listed. Admittedly, the feats aren't covered in detail, but at least the get a basic explanation.

I'd look into replacing that memory module you've got. It seems to be on its last legs. :)

I don't even recall it being 12 pages long. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

Anyway, the point of my post was just to note that I was caught off-guard by the extent of the differences between 2e and 3e. This could be in part because I never got the 2.5e books (Skills & Powers, etc.), so I never heard of these "attacks of opportunity" and whatnot. Still, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was caught off-guard. Surely I wasn't the only gamer who wasn't waiting for 3e with baited breath? :p

That sounds likely. The conversion guide released when 3e was launched clocks in at 24 pages.:)But I'm not sure when it was released. I don't remember it being available before the launch.

May I ask when you discovered ENWorld? Because I found Eric Noah's site to be a lot more informative and comprehensive than the Dragon articles. Plus, it was updated every weekday! :D

2001 or early 2002. One of my players told me about it. So my source's of info was Dragon and WOTC's website.

 When did this happen? I've been around here since before there were boards and Eric Noah just had his 3E rumor site (one of several, at the time), and I don't recall anything like this. Without going into excruciating detail, I'd be curious to know the time frame involved, so as to do some looking around of my own.

[Mods (and everyone else)- I apologize if this question sounds like it is belaboring Board Wars concepts, that really isn't my intent. I just don't recall any time at which the ENWorld boards were ever overly contentious- not to the extent of the WotC boards, which I also don't view as being as bad as implied in the above comment, in my experience. If you want me to edit/remove this question, please let me know.]

Definitely. Between Eric's website, Dragon, and all the other rumor sites at the time, myself (and others) already had functional- if crude- working PHBs for 3E well in advance of the actual release. Lack of information really shouldn't have been a problem for anyone interested in finding out what was coming down the pike for 3E.

I couldn't wait to see the daily updates and all the "insider information" from the playtesters that got leaked/released to the websites. :)

I can presume it all comes down to perception. Like some people ask what "attitude" I am referring to with the WOTC boards. Others know what I am talking about. IT all comes down to perception I guess.

That was a joke son! You missed it! :)

(I like the idea of a unified mechanic, where it seems appropriate, but have no objection to subsystems. To me, elegance is not the be-all and end-all of rpg design.)

QFAWO - Quoted for Agreement With Opinion

Fixed that for you. A unified mechanic is what brought my entire group back to D&D after throwing 1e and 2e away in disgust because of all the house timkering that needed to be done.

1st Edition was never in any danger of being even remotely elegant. It's like that stodgy old uncle that used to sit in the chair snoring. He'd occasionally fart in his sleep, and sort of chuckle to himself. He could tell some damn good stories, but after a while, you found yourself hearing the same ones. So you'd start aching for a movie, or something else more interesting. He was quite a character. But damn, did those farts stink!
