In another thread there was some discussion about kids gaming (tertiary to the main discussion). Now, I have a friend who has three young adult children. All three were exposed to gaming through his wife and him (in fact, he co-created an RPG). All three are gamers to various degrees.

So, I'm curious how many here are second generation gamers and were exposed to gaming because of their parents gaming.

Nope. My parents were some of those anti-D&D people in the 80's (at least my mother was, my father just didn't care and went along with what my mother decreed).

However, my son (6 years old) looks as if he will be a 2nd generation gamer.

In a roundabout way...

I was a fan of the cartoon series as a kid, and mom bought me the game.

Neither of us knew what we were getting in to...

I've tried getting my folks and my bro into the hobby, but it seems to be a me-only phenomenon.

Nope. My mom passed away before I starting gaming when I was younger, and my dad really didn't care/didn't 'get it'.

One day, when I have kids, I'm gonna try to get them to be gamers though :)

cheers,

No. I still have a hard time explaining to my folks what roleplaying means - or would, If I'd bother to try to explain or they'd bother to take an interest (which they don't, but that's not so bad. At least it keeps them off my back)

My dad got me into gaming when I was five years old. We had just moved into Toronto (he's in the navy) and he needed a new group. So, I rolled up an elven fighter (his name was "Nelf", and it stood for "Neutral Elf") while he made a human ranger, and we ran through the old 1e random dungeon generator.

Hell, I remember reading through the old 1e monster manuals, and making up monsters for us to fight. It all fell apart when he found a gaming group, and our little "dungeon forays" became a little less common.

Got into my first real group when I was about ten or so... basic D&D on the isle of dread, baby! But my dad was in a lot of my gaming groups through high school... we *still* have arguments over which is the better class - cleric or druid? (I still say druid).

My parents didn't get me into the hobby. In fact they didn't want me to be into in my late high school years. For a while they took away some of gaming supplies. I knew this was going to happen so I hid some of my other books. Plus, when my dad found one of my hidden dungeon magazine he tore it in half right before my eyes.

Nowadays, they are cool with me being a gamer and support my decision. In fact, they are helping to finance my GenCon trip this year (hotel and airfare only).

EDIT: My nephew recently turned one year old and I'm hoping to mold him into a second generation gamer.

I'm a first generation gamer, and got into it through an older friend. My step-dad sees the appeal of the minatures (we bonded a lot painting some of his Star Wars model kits), but not the other stuff.

I get the impression my mum thought it would just be a phase I went through, but she wasn't directly against D&D or anything. These days, she just sees it as something that's part of my personality, and fairly harmless.

As to whether I'd game with my kids (when I have kids), I'm undecided.

I was 13-years old and my brother's 23-year old friends got me into it while he was still at Cal Arts – he later joined the campaign (1st edition AD&D).
