Different edition core books

How many different D&D edition core books do you have?

I was looking over my collection realizing I have a lot.

Not counting my supplements like the 1e Unearthed Arcana, Fiend Folio and MMII, or non D&D core books like Wheel of Time d20 or Everquest RPG PH, I've still got a bunch.

I have the red Basic D&D book I started with in the early 80s, I eventually got the expert, companion and master sets as well.

I have the 1e PH, DMG, and MM.

I have the 2e PH

I have the 3e PH, DMG, and MM.

It's wierd, I used monsters from basic, 1e, and 2e interchangeably, and spells from them with little problem as well. I never felt the need to get the 2e DMG or monstrous compendiums (although I thought their descriptions were the best of any edition so far) I only copied over the DMG xp charts from a friend and used 1e magic items.

And now I've only got plans to download the 3.5 srd.

I brought it up in considering what benefit I'd gain from the new books.

The 3.5 MM will have better layout for use at the table, but all the rules content is in the srd.

The 3.5 PH will have all the spells and class abilities, feats, etc. as a player reference so that would be useful at the table as well, even though all the rules content is in the srd.

The DMG will have new DMing advice and some spell effect template charts for use with miniatures. the rules content is mostly in the SRD, and the rest is pretty small (xp, wealth charts, instant (or not so instant) generic NPCs, etc.)

when I went from 1e to 2e I didn't need a new DMG or monster manual just the PH, when I went to 3e I would have needed them all if not for the srd (I eventually got them as gifts anyway in 3e).

In going from 3.0 to 3.5 all the old magic items and monsters are useable as is, the monsters might have a few different feats or skill point totals and different DR, but they can be used in an otherwise 3.5 campaign no problem.

It just struck me as odd looking back and realizing I had never upgraded my DM manual or monster books until 3e and I had been DMing pretty contantly through the 2e era.

all of them. from every edition even 3.11ed for Workgroups

Original D&D (1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing.:D
